Extremely Cool!

If you did video chat so far you probably noticed that one odd thing with it is that the other side doesn't look at you during the conversation as one normally would do, because the camera is not placed where the video is displayed. At best it is placed close to it, but you still get the feeling that the other side is oddly looking somewhat past to you. Well, Apple fixed that!

They have invented and patented a compound eye that is integrated into the display: Patent. So now the video can be captured from exactly the same place where the video of the other side is displayed, so everyone is naturally looking at each other during the conversation.

That's a very interesting invention if it works well. I would be looking forward to such a thing.

The question is if that can be integrated into a regular LCD display, or if the whole panel had to be different. I guess it will take a while for this to show up in actual products.

The answer is, no this can not be integrated into a regular LCD. The point is that this is a whole new kind of LCD where half the pixels are displaying and half the "pixels" are capturing video. My guess is that it will take many many years until we see such a thing.

Oh dear. Don't tell Tony Blair else he'll be buying all of them for his little 1984-style Telescreen projects.
