I've been thinking that George Clooney's public left-wing elitist posturing in public is ridiculous for a while. But nevermind his political leanings and his lack of support for our troops in Iraq and our country. Even if you disagree with being in Iraq you can still support the troops - they're giving their lives for our country. But, nevermind that. This isn't political in nature.
Nevermind that he does very little - I think nothing is the better word - for any charities despite the fact that his peers take time to lend their names and voices to worthwhile causes.
I think his acting is marginal, at best. He gets away with a lot because he bats his eyelashes and flirts and smirks and he's handsome by Hollywood standards. Sometimes that sells movies. Now he decides "to be a serious actor and make a political commentary by acting in the movie Syriana" - a movie that truly distorts the truth in order to sell it to a fawning public.
Now I see that he made fun of the very person that he portrayed in Syriana at the Golden Globe Awards on Monday night and he did it in a vindictive and cruel way and proves that he is a malicious ungrateful idiot.
Clooney, during his acceptance speech for best supporting actor, thanked Jack Abramoff “just because” and made a comment about the lobbyist’s name.
“Who would name their kid Jack with the last words ‘off’ at the end of your last name? No wonder that guy is screwed up,” Clooney said during the internationally televised awards show.
What an ASS to say something like that.
Understandly, Jack Abramoff's father and family were very upset and even distraught to have their family name ridiculed worldwide in such a manner.
Jack Abramoff's father wrote a letter to George Clooney and it is succinct and articulate and right on target:
An open letter to actor George Clooney from Frank Abramoff, Rancho Mirage father of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff:
Oh how far Hollywood has fallen. When you rose to accept the Golden Globes best actor award earlier this week, you decided to take a gratuitous slap at my son, my family and even my dear departed father. Is this the tradition of Gable, Bogart, Pacino and Burton? Are you the heir to the dignity and greatness of Hollywood’s past, or more likely a portent to a depressing and horrific future?
Your glib and ridiculous attack on my son, Jack, coupled with your obscene query as to the choice his mother and I made in naming him brought shame and dishonor on you and your profession. What drove you to this lapse in lucidity, I can never know, but you need to know that your words were deeply hurtful to many innocent and decent people — who love my son and who cherish our family.
We have had to endure two years of unmitigated, outrageous falsehood directed at my son and his record of achievement on behalf of his clients and friends. The blood thirsty media, guilty of untold character assassinations during contemporary times, have even outdone themselves in their lust to create a cartoon which does not come close to resembling this fine man, my son.
The fact that you would spend those few moments accorded to you, as an honor for your work as an actor, bashing his name and his family, is astonishing. How do you sleep at night, other than, perhaps with the drink which you lamented not having at that early hour. Funny, it was very hard for us little people in television land to tell whether you had indulged in the bottle or not.
My son was named after my beloved departed father. His name, too, was Jack Abramoff. And, were he alive today, would be standing firmly behind his namesake, as his entire family and many more true friends than you will ever know.
Not that it matters to you, I am sure, but the worst part of your tirade is that it played out in front of many young people, including my sweet 12-year-old granddaughter, one of Jack’s five children. Jack did not waste his time watching the garbage spewing from your mouth, but his daughter did. You drove her to a fit of tears. Are you proud of that?
For four generations, our family has worked hard to serve this country we love. I enlisted as a young man of seventeen into the United States Navy, so I could serve my nation in WWII. My brother did the same, and we both served in South Pacific. My son dedicated his life to patriotic and religious causes, which have made this nation great. He gave unsparingly of his time and resources to help those in need.
You spend your days ridiculing our nation and our traditions. You mock those who serve our nation and its flag. You revile my son and publicly try to humiliate him in front of a national audience. I have news for you George Clooney — one day the truth about my son will come out and there will be a lot of people in your industry and others lined up to apologize for their efforts to destroy him and our family. You won’t be in that line, though, be cause the plague of arrogance and falsehood will surely continue to blind your eyes and cause your tongue to disgrace the parents who brought you onto the earth.
One wonders how your father would respond, were the roles reversed. One wonders whether your children would delight in someone lampooning your name and besmirching your reputation. You have brought yourself to a low unparalleled by the greats of your profession. Shame on you.
FRANK ABRAMOFF
Rancho Mirage, CA
to Frank Abramoff and to George Clooney, wannabe actor.
George Clooney, you're malicious, ungrateful, and truly not of the calibre of a true Hollywood movie star. You make fun of the very person you portrayed in the movie and I guess since you chose to portray someone you ridicule so openly that makes you just as ridiculous.
You're just an ass.

Hi Mastrap:
Yes, here's the thing: No matter what your political leanings what Clooney did was malicious and definitely UNcool.
What a loser.
I just want everyone to get a good look at what he did so that they recognize the face of an ungrateful bastard when they see the name on a movie that is playing or in the DVD rental store.

Most people watch films. Actors are in films. That makes them a valid conversation subject which doesn't rely on specialist knowledge of anything... ...something which everyone can participate in.
Speaking of Hollywood and homosexuals and weird... ...did you know that xenu doesn't allow his short-statured followers to believe in free speech?

Clooney was in ER? I must have missed that while I was staring a hole through the screen where Nurse Hathaway was.

Clooney was in BOTH ERs. The one you are referring to was the 2nd version.
The first was actually a lame comedy.
Then there was Clooney's "Facts of Life" days.
Nice mullet.
He is giving tootie that "I'd hit it" look.

What? There's two? I haven't seen the first one. I suspect that's probably something to do with xenu's homosexualist miniature puppet minions preventing its showing in the UK. Or something.

George is pretty, comes from a Hollywood family, and seems to do well in his work. That should be all anyone asks of him-and all the credence anyone gives him. He's certainly not Bono or Geffen or ...well you get the idea.
I am still really confused about how celebrities became sources of political and social information. Do any of these folks have any formal education in political science and sociology? Not at all; they are ACTORS, SINGERS, AND MODELS. If they're good at their jobs, that's fine. But I certainly don't seek out these people for insights and wisdom. For example, I like Barbra Strisand's music and acting. But I disagree with her on a LOT of political and social issues. I have at least had classes in these areas (and a lot of life experience dealing with "seeing both sides of an issue"), whereas she's been performing all her life. So I can believe I have a better idea about these things than she does without any imagination stretching.
Kevin, I remember Tootie then-she was definitely "hittable." Kim Fields is still pretty good looking....

Abramoff
This isn't exactly a case of big rich jerk vs little nice guy. I'm not saying Clooney should or shouldn't have said anything, but it looks like Abramoff might be due a little criticism (the name thing's a bit childish, though).

Hi Cody,
I agree, you are very perceptive.
I liked George on "ER," haven't really cared for him since. Just typical arrogance of Hollywood. We know better that anyone else. Enjoys the obesience.

I am in total agreement that what Clooney said was Jr. High humor, but for god sake, it's a bit like the South Park guys making fun of Saddam Hussien. OK, that's a stretch, but Abramhoff is clearly a bad, bad guy, not some innocent victim and defender of God and Country. He bilked Indian Tribes out of millions, bribed government officials, is tangled up in the murder of a business associate, etc, etc. Most of these are not just allegations- he has pled guilty and is cooperating with investigators.
Clooney's comments may have been childish, but the open letter from the father, while, as a father myself, heart-wrenching (I can't imagine doing any else were I in his shoes) was just delusional.
But the final point- why do you (C.D.) say that he was making fun of the person he was portraying? Clooney character was in no way based on Abramhoff. He was most likely thanking him because his voluminous misdeeds and now admitted corruption have done quite a bit to tarnish the republicans and advance the fortunes of those who agree politically with Clooney.

What does a bad lobbyist have to do with an acting award? I can't argue with the fact that Abramhoff is a bad, bad person who ahs both cheated the American public and helped a bunch of politicians find their inner greed, but WHAT IS THE CONNECTION? A cheap shot isn't any less cheap because it's true.

Don't mistake this for a heart-felt argument, but I believe there is a legitimate connection, and had he kept it civil and not gone juvenile, no one would have been talking about it.
1) Political statements at major awards shows have been with us for a long, long time- think Marlon Brando, Susan Sarandon, Jane Fonda, Kim Bassiger, Bono, the list goes on and on and on. He was not going in to some uncharted territory here.
2) I have no idea what Clooney does or doesn't give to charities, but political comments aren't coming from left field here. He's been pretty damn active politically over the last few years. His two most recent movies, Syriana and Good Night and Good luck were both political statements. For heaven's sake, he was accepting an award for acting in one of these very political movies. Is it really so unbelievable that his statements might go in that direction as well?
3) They may be entertainers, and we may not agree with them, but they have as much right to have and voice their opinions as you and I do. While their chosen profession doesn't mean they are right it also doesn't mean they are wrong.

What more could I possibly say to add to this conversation?
In short - Yes...Clooney is a punk. Always has been, always will be. The scary thing is that his lack of tact seems to be growing exponentially as the years go by.

Cheap shots are great. The more cheap shots we make at everybody in the media the better our democracy and freedoms. They ask to be politicians and movie stars so give 'em hell come rain or come shine no matter who they are. They are all spoiled children with a lotta sweets so make fools of them so that they will learn to control themselves. Don't leave a single one of them free of remark!!!

Clooney lapsed in judgment. Be sure he is regretting what he said. It was juvenile and I'm sure he knows it. No excuses will be made for him here.
Abramoff Sr. clearly wrote a heartfelt letter with lots of credible points. He's a man, and a patriarch, to stand up for his family publicly. For that I salute him.
However, I think the angle of the letter is telling about Abramoff's father and possible upbringing. The righteous indignation angle doesn't suit the facts of the case. Yes, Clooney was wrong. Yes, his family was wrongfully goaded by Clooney. But alongside the "umitigated, outrageous falsehood" are The Facts, which are nothing short of outrageous and revolting.
The tone of this letter would have been strengthened with some sense of humility, or even embarrassment, over what his son has done. Clooney made an ass of himself. Bit it is his son, not Clooney, that has besmirched the name. Instead what we get is a whole lot of pride and justification from Abramoff Sr. Even indignation and delusion about how wonderful his son is and "when the facts come out...". Not a mention of "mistakes were made, but how small you must be to take this occasion to kick a man when he's down." No, instead we get more denial and feigned innocence. It's a thin facade.
Where do you think his son learned to know one thing and say another? When does pride and perhaps vanity overwhelm one's judgment and sense of entitlement? You don't have to look much father than this letter, unfortunately.
Clooney, 0. Dad, 0. It's a draw.

You're wrong.
YOU don't know the "facts" do you? There are three sides to the story:
One side.
The other side.
THE TRUTH.
I have a feeling that Abramoff Sr. has the closest version of the truth not some distorted version that you, wolfen, claim to have.

Not at all. There are too many obnoxious truths about Clinton that top anything anyone could ever make up.

Clinton wears womens panties with a hammer and sicle.
When drunk he belches the Chinese national anthem.
He reveals all our national security secrets to the girls who work at the local massage parlor.
He once impregnated the entire NFL cheerleading roster, and had the FBI forcibly abort all the fetuses.
Clinton's demonic powers are so great that he once forced the Pope to perform fellatio on him.

I agree with everything said here, but in addition....
Why are you guys obsessed with the character assassinations actors and actresses make? Why not take issue with the ones politicians make constantly? Politicians are the ones in power, Clooney is just a guy with an opinion.

besson because sadly, most people follow movies and actors more so than politicians.
More people watch movies than they follow their own countries politics.
Most people could not care less about what happens. They only care what directly effects them.

Yeah, you're right.
A lot of actors appoint themselves as representatives of political parties and beliefs.
It's no accident that an actor is the governor of California, now is it?

See, the placement of the comma (and the pause in his speech) is very important. He's not referring to sexual relations with Ms Lewinsky, he's telling Ms Lewinsky about sexual relations with "that woman". It's very subtle, but it makes that particular sentence truthful. My favorite part was "it depends on what the definition of 'is' is". That's classic.
(I'm not defending his integrity during the matter. I'm simply impressed by his guile.)

I think I failed Cody Dawg Logic 101, cuz I don't understand the link with Abramoff, or Clooney for that matter.

I guess not, considering he ran for office, and was elected.
