So I live in a small complex of 12 houses in a rural area of Essex, UK, and yesterday night we had problems locking our two cars using the remote keyfobs - they just wouldnt lock. So we locked them with the key and went to bed. Today all sorts of things were going on - car alarms going off, people not being able to unlock/lock cars - very strange.

Anyone got any idea on what the hell is going on?!

Sounds like you've got some crazy interference waves going on there.

The aliens are attacking. It starts with the car alarms... then it's DOOM!

Some cities in North America were having similar problems last year.

In this case it was remote garage door openers were working only intermittently or doors opening and closing by themselves.

I forget what it was but they found the reason.

Try a google search. I'm too lazy.

The Navy testing E.L.F. communication, I think.

ELF doesn't bother the whales. The high-power sonar is what bothers them. ELF is still electromagnetic radiation, and it doesn't bother anything that I'm aware of. (I have worked on some of this equipment-the signals go through the planet but don't seem to interact with anything alive.)

This sort of "keyfobs don't work" and "garage doors go whacky" stuff often happens when military aircraft from other locations come visiting-often foreign aircraft. They use radio frequencies that the people in the local area aren't used to, and their signals interfere because they are not taking local radio signal limitations into account. For example, the 225-400MHz band is reserved in the U.S. for "aviation and military communications," while 400MHz to 512MHz is supposed to be for "scientific and telemetry" signals. But there are military systems that operate in that range, so some telemetry stuff gets messed up when these odd military systems are operated near them.

If the problem persists, call the appropriate Ministry. They're supposed to be in charge of the airwaves, and if they can hunt you down for not having a license for your telly, they certainly should be able to figure out who's messing with your car!

Whatever the cause, hope that it will spontaneously correct itself. Seems to be very annoying.

Maybe it's that strange and mysterious Taos Humm that I keep hearing about. No pun intended...
