Shareware, specifically. What applications do you think would benefit from Apple buying them?
My vote is for VueScan. Apple should hire Ed Hamrick and purchase VueScan. They could make it like many of the other features and give any application the ability to scan driectly into a document, especially PDFs.
And given the plethora of scanners and devices that VueScan supports, Apple would instantly have driver support for litterally hundreds of scanners. You could just plug in any old scanner (SCSI or USB), open up Preview or iPhoto, and start scanning.
It'd be perfect for iPhoto! Even though people have digital cameras these days, everyone still has those photo albums and shoeboxes full of classic photos.
If Hamrick had all the money and time he needed, plus a dev team, VueScan would be an absolutely outstanding application and an incredible feature for OS X.

THe problem with Apple is that most of their homegrown apps are pretty bad until version 3.0

Apple should purchase LaunchBar and incorporate that as a "feature" in 10.5 Leopard

It's not shareware but... either Blizzard or Valve. If for nothing but brand recognition.
If they bought out Blizzard, stuck the Apple logo on all of Blizzard's games, and made the Mac the "suggested" platform (something like the Powered By nVidia campaign) Apple would make huge strides with casual audiences. From there Blizzard could be pretty much left to what they do best.
If they bought out Valve they could do the same thing, and also acquire Valve's Steam platform, and start working on doing to online software sales what they did to online music sales.

Uhh, hmmm... not shareware but I think they should really look at a co-branded Photoshop. Other than that, I'd say, uhh, maybe some OmniGroup stuff, I dono...

StarOffice -- Sun has the key to cracking the MS monopoly molding away in a dungeon.
Intellisync or Pocketsync or whatever. Syncing to mobile devices is way way buggier and kludgier than it ought to be.

Transmit. Apple needs to have a better FTP interface built in.

The WordPerfect Suite from Corel would be most excellent. Afterall, it was available on NeXTSTEP. Either buy WordPerfect from Corel or acquire Corel and take their IP.
