Best utility for recovering "deleted" photos from a Sony digital camera?

A friend of mine took a bunch of pictures at his family reunion (the first, and probably last). He got a brand new camera, but then accidently (don't ask me how) deleted all the photos on his camera.
I've seen advertisements and whatnot for recovering deleted photos from the memory cards. Is there a cheap and/or easy way to do this?
Thanks

What kind of card is it? There are card readers you can get that will allow you to mount the card on your Desktop. From there, there may be file recover tools depending on the disk format used on the card (e.g. ISO).
Is it Secure Digital? Compact Flash? Sony?

I think it's an SD. I'll have to double check. He actually bought a card reader to see if he could open it. He can, but there're no photos on it. I did a quick search on Google and found a few apps (for around $50 each) that advertise they can recover deleted photos.
The problem is that all the apps I've looked at are Windows only. He has an iMac with Tiger.

Get info on the volume and find out what format it is in... If it is in ISO, there may be some Unix recovery tools.

If you are able to recover stuff, thank your lucky stars it wasn't a Sony. Sony's formats are proprietary, like most of its stuff.

It's a Sony Cybershot.

Well, I guess if it will mount on the Desktop, you're set. I'm just not sure if there are 3rd party Sony card-readers you could obtain. You may not need one though.
Edit: maybe OS X natively supports mounting most digital cameras so that card readers aren't necessary?
