Original DS : 148 x 85 x 28mm 275g
DS Lite: 133 x 73.9 x 21.55mm 218g

Japan Release: March 2, 2006

Looks good to me and fixes a lot of issues with the DS, ties in well with the look of the Revolution and GBA Micro too.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

If they made something like this that had ever SNES game on it ever, I'd consider it. But if it's just another gameboy... no thanks.

Wow, that looks sweet. Very Revolution controller-esque.

Shocking fact: I will be buying one. And giving my old DS to my friend, of course.

You could always get a GBA flash cart and put emulators on it. My friend does that. NES, and I believe SNES, too. You need a Windows machine to get the stuff on there, but that's the only minor catch (aside from getting ROMs).

It looks good to me, its launched in Japan in March, but whenever they decide that the rest of the world is good enough to have it, I'll be getting it. I'll probably trade my current silver DS in for it, no point in having 2 DS hanging around here.

Nintendo is great at selling people the same product over and over and over.

First the large, non-backlite GBA, then the DS in 20 different colours, the gameboy Micro, GBA and now the DS because it is big and ghastly and was rushed.

20% thinner and the "innovative iBook white" people will sell there DS and buy the same hardware again

I haven't been following the DS all that much lately and yesterday I noticed that there is a 'sequel' to the GBA Mario & Luigi RPG out for the DS. I was going to buy a DS after work yesterday but I figured I'd wait until tomorrow. I'm really glad I waited, this new one is really nice, and i'll be buying one for sure.

No you don't - I... um.... know a bloke.... who has a ROM flasher and you can use a Mac to flash it - it just takes some detective work (and it's not pretty - it's a non-GUI app.)

http://www.gameboy-advance.net/fal_s...nce_readme.htm

I think it only works with the Visoly Flasher - which may well not be available any more.

I'll get one. I hate the size of the DS. It's so clunky.

I don't like the white though. I hope they put out one in black.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel. LOOK A NEW COLOR! BUY IT! QUICK!

Does it do anything better than your existing one? Nope. But people buy it anyway. Consumers are idiots, hence why I can't wait to get in industrial design degree.

Some people don't own a DS, and this certainly makes it look a lot more like an attractive purchase.

According to this article, the DS Lite can adjust the backlight of the screen.

DS Lite's biggest new technical feature is its updated set of backlit LCD screens. The system is brighter overall, and will give the user the ability to select from four different levels of brightness for viewing and/or battery consumption.

OMG HOLY ****! That is ****ing incredible!!! I an no longer surprised that they are coming out with a new version as 1 year ago when the first DS came out there was no such technology available. Nintendo is brilliant!

"Am I the only one who thinks that Nintendo is putting out too many variations on the same theme? Don’t get me wrong, I love how creative the company has been of late, especially in a time when the game market is all about better graphics and more sequels. But I only have room on my desk for so many portable consoles.

As it is I never know if I should carry around my Micro and my DS. Both play GBA games. I like my Micro; it’s slick, it feels nice, but it’s also redundant.

It’s only been a year and a few months since the DS hit, do we really need another one? Sure it plays the same games, but this glut of form factors is starting to drive me nuts. And all of those people who purchased their DS in the last six months, heck, maybe in the past year, are going to feel like they got short changed.

And in the long run, this is only going to hurt early sales of Nintendo portables. Nintendo is teaching us to wait and see. Wait and see if the price is going to drop in three months, wait and see if a better design is coming down the pipeline. Wait and see if all of those early adopters are going to be short changed.

Microsoft is known for releasing software that still isn’t perfected and then chasing it with upgrades and updates. I don’t want Nintendo to earn a name for itself doing the same thing with hardware. "

Funny, I can think of a company who's name begins with S and ends with y that does the exact same thing.

Exactly, there is one born every minute.

And yes, sony does it, after 5 friggin years and a lower price!

As far as consumer electronics go cellphones are the one thing pretty much everyone has and they are only replaced ever THREE years on average with a much improved version. Nintendo products are replaced every 1.5 years with a marginally better product or even just a different colour.

jesus what is the frickin problem. so a company redesigns a product to make it better & give consumers the newest technology while keeping the price the same. apple does the same thing by adding new features to a design every year or so.

re: Leia's Left Bun, chill dude, what's with you and disliking change? i think this is the same as your thread about apple bringing new technology to the market. maybe you feel left out if you don't have the latest & greatest?

Looks pretty nice, I would have liked to see them round the corners around the top screen a bit, I imagine it would make it look better when opened. Don't really need a DS for anything, if they ever offer basic PDA functionality in it then I probably would pick up one of these. I really am surprised that they haven't offered any sort of merging of this with a PDA, and yes I know Nintendo loves their games and only games philosophy which is good to some degree, but it'd be nice to be able to have things like my contacts sync wirelessly, some photos, a calendar, and be able to input data.

It's a nice revision. I'm glad Nintendo is still concerned about portability. Thanks to Animal Crossing, I've played my DS every day for over a month.

Hes got a real problem with Nintendo. he calls himself a fan eventhough he complains about literally everything the company does.

If there's no backwards compatibility he complains about that, if there is, it isnt good enough. if they make a game with less emphasis on graphics, he compains, if there is heavy emphasis on graphics it isnt good enough, etc,etc... Notice how he bitches and moans about the redesigned DS, but has no problem withe the obsolete PSone or Slim PS2.

If any of you read any of his opinions on video games, just ignore it, he seems to be highly opinionated without any justification.

Wow, you Nintendo bashers are incredible. Nintendo updates their products and you act as if it's a bad thing. Why is it bad to update your products? Is it bad to attract new customers? Is it bad if your customers buy your products again and again?

Geez, MS makes a new smaller "S Controller". Sony makes PSOne and the smaller PS2? I don't see Nintendo fans harping on that.

Yeah, I never see people having sh¡t fits every time a new and smaller iPod comes out.

Hey, nice comparison shot. Wow, I didn't realize it was that dramatic. Niceness.

Sony updated it's PS2 after FIVE YEARS. Nintendo comes out with different colored portables or 'advance' or 'backlit' or 'type r' models of existing products after only a few months. The worst part is they offer no benefit.

SWG and Ca$h's arguments only work if the new editions are mostly re-sales to people who already own the original model. Maybe they are, but I'd need to see some evidence of that. A lot of people will buy something (new) simply on the basis of how it looks or how popular it is. (iPod, iMac, and PowerBook anyone?)

Eh, I agreed with you before GTA and Star Wars Battlefront II were released. PSP2 level graphics on a handheld is pretty darned sweet.

DS is still a lot of fun, though, and I own more games for it. I'd say they are about the same in terms of cost/benefit ratio.
