First Dual-Boot On Intel Mac Contest Draws Crowd

"A self-professed Mac lover who jump-started a prize award for the first person to figure out how to boot Windows XP on an Intel-based Macintosh is confident that someone will step forward to claim the bounty, now at nearly $6,000."

Deadline, March 23.

I've been told this may only work if someone does something funky with Apple's EFI implemenation and/or the XP install disks are modified. Correct me if that's wrong.

THis is the website: http://winxponmac.com/

"The OS X-Prize" would have been a catchier name, I think

Up past $6700 now. Interesting they have a couple of ads on the page though. I wonder if that ad money is going to the prize pot.

"The Rules
1. Instructions must boot Windows XP (at least), not Vista or any other version of Windows.
2. Windows must be able to coexist with Mac OS X and each system may not interfere with the operation of the other (basically a traditional dual boot system where one OS is running at a time)
3. Your method, upon starting the computer, must offer the user to boot either OS X or Windows XP (hint: GRUB)
4. The first person to email complete instructions, including pictures of the boot process to contest@pintmaster.com will be the winner. Instructions will be peer reviewed once they are received and once the solution is guaranteed working, the prize money will be transferred via paypal
5. You give this website the rights to post your solution
6. If it is determined impossible to boot Windows on the Mac by March 23, 2006, all donations will be donated to a charitable cause (please send suggestions to charity@pintmaster.com). If you donated prior to 2006/01/23 2:10pm CST, and you do not wish to donate to charity, I will return your money minus the paypal fee
7. You cannot use virtualization software such as Xen or VMWare

I've done it!

1) Buy a PC
2) Buy a box
3) Stuff PC in box
4) Write "iMac" on the side of the box.
5) Stuff iMac in box with PC
6) Slap sticky note on side that says "Turn on iMac for OS X, turn on PC for XP."

I put Cody up as a person that could probably succeed at this project.

I didn't read the rules, but are you allowed to do your own firmware 'update' using a custom-made binary?

Sounds like free money to me.

Well, considering it's past $7000 already, things currently aren't looking so positive. There's still 8 more weeks though...

Does she even have a Mac? I don't think I've ever seen her post anywhere except in the Lounge.

Pfff, then my 2 year old red-eared slider turtle could do it as well. Gotta ask him if he can spare a minute from basking.

I'll bet Chuck Norris will do it.

But he won't be able to claim the prize because he will roundhouse the iMac as soon as he gets it to boot.

The prize should go to virtualizing Windows. How many people would actually care about dual booting if virtualizing was available as an option?

Because there're already several programs to do that already.

Which ones allow Windows to be virtualized on Intel Macs, therefore running at nearly native speeds?

Because then you can't use your graphics card under Windows.

I believe you can in recent version of VMWare too, and possibly Xen.

I don't think you can in VMWare.

Xen is a bit more than a virtualizer. I don't think Windows XP is really compatible with it unless you have a Windows source license and can recompile the kernel.
