Seriously, how long?
Food?
Paperwork such as receipts, notes, etc.?
Everyone in my family yells at me because I love to throw things out. They know that when I say, "Garbage time!' that it means I'm going around and anything left laying around goes in the trash and they can try to dig it out if they really want it. They all start running around in a mad dash to grab their things before I do.
I also hate old food - leftovers - in the refrigerator. If it's more than, say, two days old (leftovers) then I toss it. I'm talking about, say, something like macaroni-and-cheese casserole or baked chicken, things like that. I refuse to let anyone save pizza anymore, period, also. It never gets eaten and it's not good left over, IMO.
I despise things everywhere and not put away. I don't let anyone in my desk for the same reason - people "borrow" things and then don't put them away and it annoys me.
So, I'm asking this question to find out what your ideas are to see where I stand in relationship to others.
I guess it's the Neatnik vs. Slob thread.

Receipts until the warranty expires or I sell the damn thing. Sometimes a while after if I claim it on my taxes.

I had like 200+ soda cans randomly laying around in the corner of my room for about 4 months. Everything else gets thrown away, including class notes and notebooks. I always regret throwing them away though, but I'm an idiot.

Okay, you got me.
I have a whole bunch of PowerBook CDs that I need to dump...I just don't.
I save original boxes and I put the original receipt in them and a copy of the original receipt also in case the original receipt fades. All go in the attic.

I have a ton of pretty coloured floppies that were hardly used but I keep telling myself I want to make some campy art project out of them instead of tossing them.
i also don't know what do do with my $20 x 18 zip disks.

I'm the opposite.
I keep everything -- old CDs, old papers, old receipts, old hardware, everything. Except food. That gets gross.

I keep things... until they break or become overly irritating.

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

We're generally good at throwing stuff away. I'm better at it than my wife is, but she's learning. There's nothing like a toddler to remind you about how much extra stuff you have (when they start messing around with it!)
One thing we're both very bad at, though, is getting rid of books. We have most of the books we've ever bought somewhere in this house. What do you do with old technical books, anyway? With my luck, once I throw out that copy of David Pogue's MacOS 8.5 Secrets, I'll really need it!

Do clothes count?
I still have a tee shirt that my wife sleeps in... on it it says "1988 East Coast Jr Olympic Volleyball Championship"
Oh, and I also have a concert tee from Van Halen's 1984 tour (I wasn't allowed to go.. but an older brother of a friend got it for me).
Both are pretty faded... and they actually feel like panty hose... worn so thin.... but no holes.

I can't stand old food. If its not going to be eaten within a day or two, throw it out.
Other things I tend to keep around or put in storage if I think they'll be useful. I left a lot of books with my parents before moving to Japan. No way I was getting rid of them.
I end up picking up random old junk on my own. I've got a couple of Mac Classic 2s that make great clocks.
Now regular trash, well, that just goes out on trash day.

I'm the same way. I hate leftovers, and everything should have its place, or it should be tossed (lots of things for example should go to goodwill so that e.g. someone else can use them).
Perhaps you'd like, like we do, the show on cable called "Neat." The host echos a lot of your sentiments, and even has some more good ideas along these lines.

not as neat as I want to be. My desk is overwhelming at present, but the rest of the house is decent. I also go on kicks where it's get out of my way and throw those damn magazines in the recycling!
And leftover pizza makes excellent breakfast or lunch, it never gets wasted.

Same. DVDs and CDs I'll keep until I watch of listen to them all the way through in case I have to exchange them.
I never have leftovers except for pizza, which will keep a day or two.
I did a huge clean-up and throw-out a year ago when I decided that I was finally moving, it felt good to get rid of a lot of the crap I had accumulated in the 6 years at my old apartment. I'll probably do something similar in a bit, get rid of the last of the useless crap.

Such as still have my first Federal Income Tax return.
Going to get a new file cabinet, so that I can get my Den more organized. My preference is nest, I have slipped.

I used to be when I was living in Montreal. Then I moved to Victoria and clear out lots of things. Since then I periodically go through my things, like books will I read this book again, if not I give them away. The only things I hold on to are greeting cards and those do not take much space.

That's pretty cool, WDLove!

my mother-in-law keeps everything - and here mother is the same way...the were cleaning out her house and she had like 20-30 cool whip containers - stuff like that - i am already stopping my wife from becoming the same way - it helps to move from place to place then you just throw crap away - but once we get a house then it could become more of a problem - i'll toss anything

I'm almost exactly the same. It's not that I'm a neat freak, but that I can't stand clutter.
