In some cultures it is normal to eat dogs – just like we eat cows, pigs or chicken. Interestingly, in California it is illegal to eat dogs or horses, while it is quite usual to eat horse in Europe. Allegedly dog is quite delicious.

Used to be a big dog restaurant near my home in Beijing, one of the specialties was "Hand Torn Saint Bernard" they used to stun them with a pipe then tear them up while still allive.
I never ate there.

I'd eat anything. Nice photos. If we did it all our life like they did, it wouldn't seem strange at all.

To each his own.. there are people that are disgusted that I eat beef. I own 3 dogs, I would not eat them, nor would I knowingly eat dog. But, it seems they are taking care in the routine.. or whatever.
Meh.
And you Cody?

I hope that eventually I'll rid meat from my diet, as much as I love it and rely on it today. I used to think, "Those vegetarian morons don't understand that we've evolved to eat meat!" and only this year did I finally realize the merits of vegeterianism. I've learned about human psychology and evolution in multiple classes, and I finally see that to be "moralistic" is, in many cases, to go against what we have evolved to do.
Eating dog is, quite frankly, horrible. But eating cow is the same, and I'm one hell of a culprit. We're taking lives to satisfy our taste buds, not to mention the treatment of the animals. It's sad commentary and I do wish I had enough willpower to stand against it.

I would like to try horse again. Hopefully cooked, as opposed to the Japanese style of raw horse. I'm not opposed to it, but would rather enjoy trying grilled horse, or horse in some nice mushroom sauce.

I would try it maybe if it was a dog that was specially raised for food. I wouldn't eat a pet dog (who knows what medication it got) or a random street dog. And I think I would skip those brain blood sausages. I don't eat brain.

True. But I'm a big guy, and Japanese sized portions of meat don't cut it for me.
And Kobe beef is good, but overly hyped.
Curse you. Its midnight and now I want some steak.

...which is why my horses need all sorts of weird checks on them. We don't eat horse here, but since we now have an open border with the dirty Frenchies we have to treat our pets as potential food supply items and stick to all the continental regulations.

Clearly we're going to have to take this conversation 'outside.'
You know, cattle killed my grandfather! Every time I eat beef, I think of it as me taking a small amount of revenge against the species that killed my grand dad.

Joshua, why don't you take a small amount of revenge against the species that killed 11 million people between 1939 and 1945, 1.5 million people in 1915, 800,000 people in 1994...? Human burgers are the ****!

Vegans who claim "it's morally wrong to eat meat" are a bunch of hypocrites. This has come up in the past, but I might as well repeat it. Animals die so people, including vegans can live. Animals are killed during the harvesting of vegetables, animals are killed when land is cleared to build houses, roads, parking lots, etc.
If you don't live in the forest and don't grow and harvest your own food, then animals die so you can live. As a human, you have to accept that. At least meat-eaters make use of some of the animals killed for them.

Well hey, I'm pretty sure that at some point folks were killed in order to create your country (Canada must have had some armed struggle at some point, no?). Does that mean that it's morally OK to go kill more folks?
Oh. And go look up the difference between "vegan" and "vegetarian".

The point is, you do what you can. If you can get your nutrients by not eating animal based products then you do so. And naturally by the same token vegans tend to want to avoid the unnecessary killing of animals. This can be done by trying to eat organicly grown vegetables, and being environmentally conscious and politically active. They may not succeed in avoiding the unnecessary killing of animals, but the effort and outlook counts for something.
As long as they're not brow beating you why call them hypocrites? I may not be a vegan, but I have learned to respect someone who tries to live by their (peaceful) convictions.

This thread is not about vegans. It's about dog eating. Once you have decided that it is all right for you to eat animals what is so special about a dog that it is not eaten but cattle are?

I have eaten dog on a couple of occasions. tasted just fine. in the poorer parts of the philipinnes it is pretty common to eat dog (that's where I had mine). It's a pretty inexpensive meat that people roast and eat during drinking parties. The way that they usually did it was by slitting their throats (saving the blood of course), and then hanging them up on something and burning their fur off. They then just chop them into little bits (including intestines and everything) and cook them up in a big pan. Then they cook the blood as an apetizer (you can buy cooked blood on the streets most every day) and have their drinking party.
My neighbors (at the time) sold their dog to some people for their drinking party meat. I once saw a really poor guy cooking a whole puppy in a pan... that was weird.
