NBC is giving a webcast of an unaired episode of "Book of Daniel" on their website. Apparently the site only works with Internet Explorer 5.5 or above ONLY on Windows. I've tried it using Flip4Mac and every Mac browser I have...I even tried it using Explorer under Virtual PC but it didn't work. Can anyone get this to work on their Mac?

Here's the site: http://www.nbc.com/The_Book_of_Daniel/

I agree that it wasn't very good, but does your comment mean that he can't watch the unaired episodes just because you didn't like it.

Good thing you don't regulate your life by what I don't like.

It doesnt, however from what I've read about Book o Dan it sounds like it is basically just a drama version of Father Ted.

Anyways, for deviant-priest humour you can't beat Father Ted.

I watched this show because of all the "hype" associated with it. That was some of the worst acting I'd seen in awhile. Book is closed on this one.

I agree...the show wasn't that great. I'm just frustrated that I can't do something on my Mac that is apparently problem-free with a Windows machine. I thought Flip4Mac was supposed to solve many of these Windows Media problems.

I love that show. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to afford TV for years (toss up between internet or TV), so I can't watch BBC, PBS, and KTEH/KVIE.

Nothin' like an old, drunk, Irish priest cursing and beating people.

Absolutely - my sister gave me the DVD box set for Christmas. I'd forgotten how friggin' hilarious it is! Especially from my POV as I went to a Catholic abbey school.

Okay, in an attempt to solve the actual original poster's problem, I've tracked down the link to the actual ASX file:

http://mfile.akamai.com/22181/wmv/nb...daniel_105.asx

Seems to work just fine with Safari and Flip4Mac, although I only watched the first 5 seconds or so. Apparently this thing isn't incompatible with OS X at all. Whoever designed the script that points your browser at the right mirror for the ASX file was just a moron.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I have a feeling your stay in MacNN is going to be a short one. I've grown tired of your constant personal attack tantrums.

You are very sensitive, but not very sensitive in return. I think I am liked here by most, just not you and one other guy. I've been around a long time and I'll be here still when you finally get tired of being rude to everyone.

Thanks.

I was able to get the episode to run with Flip4Mac with the URL to the .asx file you have above. How do I get the .asx file for future online episodes? I looked around the NBC site but didn't have much luck. Thanks for actually helping to solve the problem.

All I did was do a View Page Source on the page. The code they use is just JavaScript - just scroll down a bit and you'll find a variable called "pathToASX". That's the path to the folder that the ASX file is in (an absolute path, starting with nbc.com, since it starts with a slash). In this case it was:

Code:
var pathToASX='/nbc/Video/asx/Book_of_Daniel/';
Next, there's a variable called "content" that has the actual filename. In this case, it was:

Code:
var content='bookofdaniel_105';
Now, if you look down a bit, you see this:

Code:
function init() { if(isIE) { playClip(content); } else { alert('We are morons, so we think this clip requires IE on Windows'); // Okay, so I took a few liberties here :p } }
So, it's calling playClip with the 'content' variable. Let's see what playClip does:

Code:
function playClip(clip) { document.contentObj.URL=pathToASX+clip+'.asx'; }
As you can see here, this function sticks the 'clip' variable (which is really the 'content' variable passed into this function) on top of the 'pathToASX' variable, and sticks an .asx extension on the end. So, we can just do this ourselves. In this case:

http://www.nbc.com/nbc/Video/asx/Boo...daniel_105.asx

which gets us a file containing the links to the ASX file on the Akamai site (which is what I ended up linking to you).

Ta da! Now you know how to dig around on pages and find your way around stupid browser checks when the user agent doesn't do it.
