So I just beat TMNT on nintendo for the first time ever (thanks to the help of saved states). At the end, splinter turns into a human... but I thought he was a mutated rat?!?!? WTF? Is anyone else traumatized by this?

I cannot begin to express my utter disbelief.

From what I remember, Splinter was a human that was transformed into the rat thing. The turtles i believe were always turtles.
The turtles always wanted to find a cure, so their Master Splinter could turn back into his human form.

At least that is what i remember from the cartoons. Its been too long. I dont know if the movies had a different background story.

Please tell me you haven't been trying to beat that game for over 10 years.

No no no. I haven't played it in that long. I never got very far in the game - I'd get to the damn part and die and get mad.

In the comics and movies, I believe Splinter was originally a rat. In the cartoon, he was originally human. The explanation of how a rat learns the deadly fighting art of ninjitsu is all in the beauty of comics.

carton suggested he was a human turned into a rat. But it's the only part of the continuum that says that. everything else says he's a big rat.

The last two posts are accurate. I did think it was strange to see Splinter depicted as a rat in the movie, even though that paralleled the comics. I didn't know it at the time. Although I was a huge fan of the series, I was a fan of the cartoon primarly; it was to me canon. Years later I found out many of the cartoon's characters and settings (such as Krang) were not present in the comics.

I'm glad to find exactly what I suspected from the thread title.

The movie (the first one) was more along the lines of the original comic and had the story more or less right. The cartoon deviated quite a bit.
