(THIS THREAD WAS ORIGINALLY BUT INADVERTENTLY PLACED IN THE P/L AND GOT ONLY TWO RESPONSES WHICH ARE TRANSCRIBED AND ATTRIBUTED BELOW)

Once again a national TV ad sends the message that it's ok to steal. Any of you who've seen the spot would have to know I'd comment on it here.

A 20-something young white male, casually dressed at a self-serve soda fountain dispenser in a convenience store fills his cup with Coke from the dispenser nozzle and it looks so good and is so irresistible to him that he steals a sip.

Once he sees his sip has diminished the volume in his cup (duh!) he goes to take another free sip and he looks over toward the store clerk (actually it looks like it might be the store manager or owner because he's on the phone) and takes his free sip while crouching down so the clerk can't quite tell he's free sipping.

The closing caption says something about sip stealin not being a felony in all 50 states.

Obviously scripted. Obviously portrayed by actors. Obviously meant to be humorous. And just like the Bowie ad, obviously not the example we want to send to America's youts.

Hope this ad and this thread makes the point better than last time.

Moral of the story is if you run a store and are on the phone you will be ripped off.

It wasn't that fekkin thief David Bowie was it?

You're wasting your time for a couple of reasons.

First, stop being arrogant! You are assuming that because nobody agreed with you that they must not have understood your point. We all understood it, we just think it's nonsense.

As I said in the last thread, there are ads and media doing real harm out there that you are conveniently ignoring
- unrealistic body images in young women (and convincing men to expect them)
- drug companies that are trying to convince you that you have a non-existent or unlikely disease so you will ask your doctor to prescribe you drugs

I could go on. If you want to fight a battle, why not fight one that's worth the effort?

You sound like someone who would rail at the Salvation Army for being concerned with poverty and homelessness when the fight that's REALLY worth fighting is the one against lung cancer.

I think you may want to shift from your position slightly.

Try this:

Aberdeenwriter, I don't feel the need to address the issues you have focused your attentions on, so far. As far as I am concerned the problems of unrealistic body images in young women (and convincing men to expect them) and drug companies that are trying to convince you that you have a non-existent or unlikely disease so you will ask your doctor to prescribe you drugs, are the issues that strike me as being of greater importance.

However, I know this world is far from perfect in many respects and no matter where we look there is some area where improvement is needed. If WE ALL contributed even a little of our time and energies in any of the areas where we see a need and feel a passion to act we could really make great strides toward making the world a better place.

And so, inspired by your threads, I will start threads of my own which address the issues I feel passionate about.

I wish you well with your efforts and hope you will support mine, at least with an endorsement.

Thanks!

hayesk
To which I would reply:

Thanks for your kind words. I certainly do wish you well and hope my endorsement helps you gain added support for your worthwhile efforts. You are absolutely correct in every thing you've said and I know with someone like you leading the effort, those who are plagued by these problems will have reason for hope.

Good luck and please know I am thrilled by the leadership and the example you will provide.

Cheers!

Aberdeenwriter

Oh man, I'm predicting that this thread will drop faster than the David Bowie thread. Reason being is that this is the SAME THING all over again.

I "sip steal" and I don't see anything wrong with it. It's not really even stealing since the places usually offer free refills anyway (and if they have a sign posted stating that they don't, then I don't do it).

P.S. I haven't seen the ad, but it sounds pretty clever and funny, actually. Assuming it's well executed.

You make some very fine points.

Yes. It IS funny. It IS clever. It IS well executed.

And it demonstrates the guy, who obviously believes he is doing something wrong, basically shop lifting.

Is that the kind of message that we want being conveyed?

And after being made aware of it in the Bowie spot and now this, what would you say if there was another one in the next few weeks?

It's an unfortunate fact that we all are becoming so inured to media of all kinds that when the word was given about the danger of OBL before 9/11 no one seemed to pay attention.

When we, here, go to the trouble of trying to communicate and people don't read or comprehend the information presented them, how can you fault anyone for trying to get the word out about a worthwhile subject when it is obvious very few readers had the opportunity to consider this matter.

If there is a subsequent example of this being done in the media perhaps that would be enough evidence to suggest attention be paid to the messages we send to our youth.

If no one knows about this Coke spot then in their minds the Bowie ad is just completely inconsequential.

It's important to have this known to the lounge community.

Don't you agree?
