No, you can't.

Anybody else have another answer that I might like better?

Oh, and why can't I do that? I think that DJs do pretty much the same thing... buy the music once and play it for large groups of people at dances (though I am not doing dances).

I have also seen similar actions by wedding videographers... on the slideshow at the receptions they usually have some of the couple's songs playing the background.

Yeah, DJs (and bars, etc) have to pay additional licence fees to the MCPS (and the like) in order to play the music.

The wedding video folks are probably doing it illegally.

Don't believe me? Check your CDs. On the actual CD itself it'll say something like "Unauthorised broadcasting, public performance, copying or re-recording, renting or selling under any exchange or re-purchase scheme of any manner prohibited".

Oh, I believe you.... I just didn't know how DJs and such did it. I know multiple DJs that do not have any special licenses or pay any such fees. Though that is probably illegal (like you said). How do you get a license to play them like that if you are a DJ? It seems like you shouldn't have to do each song individually.... that would take up way too much time.

Actually, the clubs that have the DJs play music might pay for the license.

Ahh... so a lone DJ that brings in his music is covered by the club's license?

I don't know if that's always the case, but in general, a club could have a general license that covers everything that is going on inside the club. Actually, I think in some countries, it HAS to be that way. Not sure about the different laws in different countries though...

Yep, true. I was thinking more about wedding DJs rather than club DJs when I said that. Since I believe that all club DJs should be taken out and shot and stuff.

I'm not 100% on this one, but I believe there's various licences for various things. Here, for example, an acquaintance of mine has to pay licence on his jukebox but hasn't got licence to have live music on (it's probably changed now, since this year our beloved government has shaken the rules up in an attempt to get even more money out of folks).

Anyone know where to get a license like the ones mentioned? I was also thing along the lines of a wedding DJ as well.

Go for it, just put an attribution and copyright notice for the music you use. Fair Use and all that.

I think if you stay under the 30 second rule, you can do anything.
