How much will it cost me to have my CD reader repaired?
I'm on a PB 12 1.33ghz.... warranty expired, wasn't wise/rich enough to buy more applecare.

probably in the $350-$400 ($USD) vicinity. $200-ish for part and an hour and a half or so of labor.

The same as the price of AppleCare extended warranty if you'd purchased it originally: About $300 clams.
Sorry to break it to you.

There are a couple of Powerbook repair companies that may be cheaper than going through Apple.
Or you can get buy the part and try and repair it yourself if your good at that stuff.
Some I've seen mentioned on various sites....
www.powerbookmedic.com
www.pbparts.com
www.pbfixit.com/Guide
www.MacService.com
I've never used any of these before, but may be worth taking a look.
Also, if they're gonna charge you for opening your PB anyway, you may wanna consider having them upgrade other parts (larger HD, etc)
Good luck.

Your jokes suck.
Thanks y'all.
To buy new or not to buy new.. hmm... I think I won't buy new. I'm going to get this repaired. Then in I'll buy an iBook Intel and give the PB to my GF

Send it to me. I know how to put a new drive in it. Did it for someone in my husband's company. Bought the drive on eBay and got my Torx screwdriver set out and installed it. It was easier than the iBook g3 ice which I upgraded over Christmas and was a beeotch.
THEN SELL IT AND BUY ONE UNDER WARRANTY!

I would second the motion on sending your PowerBook to Cody. She is awesome and very bright.
