Awesome movie...one i am going to have to get on DVD.....eventually.
It keeps from making the issue so black and white that it would seem corny. but it clearly distinguishes the motives and method of the warring factions (Israeli vs Palestinean). Directed by Steven Speilbery.... this is an outstanding movie. Eric Banas acting deservs an Oscar imo. ( i havent seen the nominations).
It is a movie of terrorism, international espionage and above all conflicting idealogies. Based on the terrorist attach at the Munich Olympic games where the whole Israeli team was killed by Palestinean(muslim) militants. And how the Israeli Armed forces responded in kind.
Worth noting (and this might be a spoiler)...and maybe this should belong in the PL..... is how the Islamist/Palestinean terrorists hate Jews, and how they target any civilian life as opposed to military targets. As opposed to the carefully targeted operation of the Israeli armed forces to kill the masterminds behind the terrorist attacts.
It might not be a "cinema" movie...in that it lacks the hollywood blockbster special effects. But the special effects, such as creatingthe sets to resemble the 1970s were awesome. The Script is great as well and the score is by John Williams. Great recipe for an outstanding movie imo.
Highly recommened movie.
Cheers

Preachy overdone drivel of dubious historical accuracy.
Journalist Yossi Melman of the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz has said that the book is "strewn with mistakes" adding that, after a lawsuit identified Aviv as Avner, "investigative reports about him revealed that he represented himself as a Mossad agent even though he had never worked in the Mossad and certainly had not participated in operations to kill those involved in the athletes' murder. Aviv, as he emerged from these investigative reports, had a special fondness for conspiracy theories, and it turned out that he was willing to hire out his services to anyone who was willing to pay, even to both sides of the same dispute."
Melman and other critics of the book and the film have said that the story's premise — that Israeli agents had second thoughts about their work — is not supported by interviews or public statements.
A retired head of Israel's Shin Bet intelligence service, Avi Dichter, likened Munich to a children's adventure story. "There is no comparison between what you see in the movie and how it works in reality," he said in an interview with Reuters. - Wikipedia

Like any other "great" movie about historical events (Schindler's List, Braveheart, Chariots of Fire, etc. etc.), it is given the director's personal view of the situation. Of course, he also has poetic license to alter any parts in order to enhance the story.
I feel the movie was rather well-done. Inaccuracies did not bother me. The movie was good, the acting was solid (some of the bit players were a little weak, but overall it was good), and the storyline kept me interested despite the length.
I also feel that Hawkeye's comment about terrorists targeting civilian life instead of military targets is quite inaccurate, misleading and selective. The Palestinian retribution attacks on Avner's team were just as singularly accurate as those of the Israeli's themselves.

Not to get an argument going or anything (ive had enough of them in the PL).....
But from the movie (and real life events currently taking place), its the civilian population targeted by the palestinean terrorists. The israeli team were not members of a militia or army.
But yeah the movie was great if not a bit long.
Cheers

Quite violent, but a entertaining and engaging movie nonetheless. I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

Hahahaha...sorry, I see what you're saying, but it is incorrect. The Israeli team were working for the Mossad (if secretly). Whether they were militia or not in their "real" lives, they were a government-funded team that was targeting Palestinian terrorists. The Palestinians knew this from counterintelligence, and so made equally specific and direct "hits" in return.
My only complaint was the guy who left and went back to making clocks or toys or whatever it was he was doing. He seemed to be sort of "killed off" without much fanfare.

I've seen it a total of three times. Each time with a different person, because I keep finding more people who need to see it.
I agree with you, Greg - the toymaker (the "I dismantled bombs but now I make them" guy) was killed off in a lackluster, quite uncreative, and predictable manner.
I've seen a lot of movies recently (Munich, Memoirs of a Geisha, Capote, Syriana, Good Night & Good Luck, Rent to name a few) and it's definitely one of my newly-found favorites. Syriana, I will easily say, was not and will never be.

I appologize....i meant the Israeli olympic team (not the assasins(who either way took ample care to avoid civilian casualties)). And the other's who were killed at the airports and embassies by islamic terrorists.
I guess my point is..... the palestineans targeted anyone who was Jewish, the israelis targeted the organizers and terrorists but NOT civilians.
Cheers

Oh, i had a question for the Jewish ppl on these boards(or anyone who can answer this) if you have seen this movie.
Is there any particular significance if you offer someone a meal to "break bread", and they refuse ? i never understood that part in the movie

It is a work of fiction, not a documentary. Spielberg do not make any documentaries. As for Schlilnder List, Spielberg incorporate his point of view and personal feelings. He is at times a great director and he wanted to show that reprisals do not always work but what else is there to do when you see your countrymen being executed because they are Israelis.
It is my choice for the best movie of the year because it is excellent all around.

I was wondering the same thing. At first I figuring it had something to do with the gov't guy viewing him as "unlean" or whatever, but I'm not really sure.

It is a question of trust and when you break bread with another Jew on Sabbath he becomes part of your family.
