LAPD Pursues High-Tech End to High-Speed Chases

It is an air-propelled miniature dart equipped with a global positioning device. Once fired from a patrol car, it sticks to a fleeing motorist's vehicle and emits a radio signal to police.

Bratton hailed the dart as "the big new idea" and said that if the pilot program was successful, Los Angeles' seemingly daily TV fix of police chases could be a thing of the past.

"Instead of us pushing them doing 70 or 80 miles an hour … this device allows us not to have to pursue after the car," Bratton said. "It allows us to start vectoring where the car is. Even if they bail out of the car, we'll have pretty much instantaneously information where they are."

Somewhere in Scandanavia (I think) they came up with something better. A harpoon. Really! The cop harpoons the fleeing car and using the beefier breaks on the patrol vehicle, slows the fleeing car to a stop. I can just see Joe Thug's face when the harpoon pops through the back seat and inbetween the front buckets! Woah! "Dude, I think they got us!"

Even better, when it pops through their spleen. "Dude, I think I'm going to die. "

Now all we need is a peglegged captain bent on catching that illusive White Ford Bronco. Most likely to his own doom.

Why did no one think of this before? Batman`s been doing it for ages.

These folks are thinking too hard. I was watching Tom & Jerry one day, and they did the same thing with a rope and a toilet plunger. Problem solved.

Pffft, all of this hi-tech nonsense...

sorta right. no gps involved in that part, the cops bugged the cars engines (the ones that were given to the conficts to help them out) , what your thinking of is the part when the cops in the chopters shot a claw thing onto the car and used electricity to kill the car

Hey. Whatever it takes to stop crime. You wouldn't want that kid to entertain vendetta ideas now, would you?

I should point out that the San Diego Sherrif that shot "at a passenger in a chase" actually shot THE PASSENGER. THREE TIMES. The passenger was not only cooperating with the deputy, he was a cop for the Air Force. It seems that after being told to stand up, saying "Ok, I'm standing up now" is cause to get plugged three times... Look here.

In all seriousness, anything that reduces the emotional overload felt by either the fleeing driver OR the police is a Good Thing®. If sticky GPS golfballs keep the bad guys from feeling like they're running for their lives and keep cops from getting angrier and angrier at the fleeing driver, then they are GOOD, even if they sound silly.
