New variable-geometry turbos:
473HP (58 more than the old model)
502TQ (87 more than old model) (available at 1950 rpm)
~The peak torque of 502 pound-feet is available for 10 seconds during a special overboost mode of 20.9psi. Normal peak torque is 457 pound-feet.

new AWD system

90lbs lighter than outgoing model.

Porsche (and Car and Driver, after testing it) estimate 3.6 second 0-60 mph and 11.9 second 1/4 mile. Top speed increase beyond 193 mph up from 189 mph.

The car runs 7:50 range around the Nurburgring.

The car also will not have the new PDK twin-clutch (six or seven speed) transmission. yet. 5-speed manumatic or 6-speed manual is all for now.

15mpg city/22mpg highway

$130,000 (est. base price)

That strikes me as a super-idiotic comment.

Neither of these is even REMOTELY acceptable "value for money". It's just a criterion that is completely irrelevant.

You either want one and have the money to buy it, or you don't.

I'm not happy with all the silver-coloured crap (centre console, steering wheel) inside the 997 series. Other than that, no comment.

I guess the problem was that there was absolutely no definition to the term "better value" in your sentence.

See, the Aston Martin DB9 is much better value because it doesn't make me look like I have to compensate for anything.

The Ferrari (which Ferrari?) is much better value because it is actually beautiful.

The Lamborghini is much better value because it will douse the entire neighbourhood in a sound like pulling teeth and make little children cry.

The new mini is much better value because it will get you girls.

The Kenworth truck is much better value because that Cummins engine has horsepowers that make your 911 turbo weep silently to itself after blowing a gasket.

My lame-ass Volkswagen van is much better value because I can actually fit my gear into it, and it gets thrice the mileage.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my explanation or you:

I have absolutely no problem with your choice in cars.

In fact, I rather like the 911 myself.

However, claiming it's "better value" just struck me as a profoundly silly statement.

I just didn't want to use the term "silly" because it's been so thoroughly misappropriated so often on this board.

So, no - YOU made a "dumb" comment without realizing it and got your dick all bent when I pointed it out. I realize that automobiles are a sensitive subject in that regard, and I'm sorry that you thought I was questioning your taste in penile prosthetics.

I wasn't.

You have problem respecting people including yourself in a public forum like this.

Not taking sides, but I don't see the problem with the initial post of "much better value". By saying "better" the Porsche isn't being compared with all cars, just against 1 other - the Ferrari. The initital post does not state it is a good value compared to most cars.

Kinda like saying a bottle of wine that costs $200 is a better value than a similar bottle of wine for $300. Neither may be a good value compared to all wines, but one can be a better value than the other.

You attacked him first, and now you're being even more of a dick. Very nice. He said it's a better value compared to the Ferrari, and performance-wise, it is. He didn't compare it to a Mini, Lambo, AM, or any other car. Jeez, lighten up.

Sealobo, you're right, it has better value than the Ferrari, better "bang for the buck", so to speak.

If you buy this type of car, you seldom care what they cost to buy or maintain.

Sealobo - these guys need to take a tour around Pacific Place or IFC car park to see what we mean.

Not even performance-wise. Porsches are better value all-round anyways as they tend to last a while...

30 year old Porsche with 500,000 on the clock? Still a daily driver.

30 year old Ferrari with 50,000 on the clock? It's gonna break every time you look at it.

Incorrect. Porsches are not in that league and are accessible to the average buyer.

As the saying goes... ..if you've just won the lottery, buy the Ferrari; if you've saved all your life for it, buy the Porsche.

Well... not sure. To be honest i can afford a pretty expensive car and I do care about maintenance... money is one issue but it's also a pita to send the car to the garage on a monthly basis for checking and fixing.

If you wanna see great cars in Hong Kong, visit Grand Hyatt's lot. There is a Dino over there, red, usually covered. The all souped up yellow 993 GT2 parked in the opposite belongs to the owner of the hotel, if it's still there. There are also a few DB9, Gallardo and Continental GT in various color. You can't really find anything cheap in that lot... the cheapest thing would be something like a e46 sedan.

I don’t know which particular group you’re talking about here, but in society as a whole, very few “average buyers” are able to spend £180,000–220,000/$310,000-380,000 (which is about what the current 911’s cost here) on a car.

i agree... a base 997 in HK is going for $170,000 USD after tax... that's outragous.

but a small band of people are still buying like no tomorrow. it's good to be rich.

Wow. You're being seriously ripped off there. Current 911s go from £59k - £77k here, well within range of the average "enthusiast" buyer.

Cars are more heavily taxed here: £60,000-80,000 is approximately the price range for a new Audi A6 here.

Also, there is a difference between an average buyer and an average enthusiast buyer—the latter is usually somewhat better off, fincancially.

thanks for the pics ajprice. I think it looks nice as hell with some snow collected behind the rear tires, gives it a more useable feel to it.

I want to spend my tuition on one.

Here's the difference: The average buyer tends to also buy other things (i.e. nights out, beer, cinema tickets, furniture). The average enthusiast buyer tends to not buy these other things, thus leaving all his money for his vehicle habit. So he can afford it even though he may not be making more than average money.

Man, you 'want' a true opel, not an opel-branded Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky. Something like the Vectra GTS (*) is more cool and practical.

(*) Don't you find the new Vectra 2005 front look rather ugly?, the previous Vectra 2002 was way cooler and personal, the new one is much Astra-alike, I don't like every car of a maker having the same look, it gets boring, just my opinion.
