We've all done it haven't we? Got into an argument with a windoze user about the respective merits of our platforms. At some point I will raise the sheer good looks of Mac eye candy, the response usually being scornful and dismissive. As if aesthetics don't matter, although perhaps lack of taste is a prerequisite/inevitable consequence of using Redmond's rickety repast! I just love the look of my home folder, and enjoy it every single time I open it. Can anyone here better it?

Truth be told, I keep the finder looking as uncluttered as possible, column view. I really don't care much about the eye candy.

So that will be nil grooviness then.

Neat pics, guys. On a similar subject, the thing that bugs me is the lack of custom icons for Library subfolders. I have been waiting for Apple to give us some nice icons for the Library folder for awhile now, but I fear I'll remain disappointed.

In all fairness this actually makes me quicker when I need to get something, instead of remembering the place of a folder, or it's name, I just remember what it looked like. And with IconCM (a contexual menu item) it's pretty quick to label em.
Oh I also manually changed the default folder icon under OS X.

I personally use photoshop and fireworks to create or edit images, Pic2Icon to make the icons, IconCM to copy and paste them quickly.
If you're looking for a lot of custom icons you can check out xicons.com/interfacelift.com it's a pretty good site.

I use column view if navigating deep into sub-folders, but by adding distinctive graphic icons in folders I go to often (such as 'Home') makes sense to me - they are instantly identifiable however they are ordered, and at 128 x 128 they are virtually impossible to miss with the mouse! I iconise all of my image files for example, and with my 17" screen can view 28 thumbnails at a time without opening any app to do it.
The same principle applies when they are put in the dock (most of my 'Home' sub-folders are there), surely it's the easiest and quickest way to access them. Plus they look good! Particularly using cleardock so they just float at the bottom of the screen.
Can't say I ever use list view.

interesting. I use the mouse as little as possible. Quicksilver does all of my searching and launching far faster, and column view is also navigable by keyboard. For me, using a mouse feels just slow.

I guess we all find our own way of doing this. I have a ahem! MS mouse , (with several contextual menu actions available with right-click) and with the scroll wheel button set as 'double click' making moving up and down the host folder and opening the target file/folder very quick 'n easy, and as this only takes one hand I can have a cup of tea or pick my nose at the same time! I also frequently utilise the different file order options (name, size, date created etc) for different folders as required, something not available in column view. It works well for me, particularly with folders containing dozens of image files.
