Sweet. Funny that it appeared in a Sci-fi novel and it's totally practical. I hope these guys can do it, this would make getting people and cargo into space REALLY cheap compared to using rockets.

Slashdotters always post links to this same company. I hope a space elevator is built one day, but this really isn't anything. They tested their robot crawlers on a ribbon. That'll be the easy part. The hard part is building the actual space elevator out of carbon nanotubes and working out all the problems that entails.

This is like designing a button in the cockpit of a warp speed spacecraft before being able to build a warp speed spacecraft. Technically it's progress, but won't make anything useable be built any faster.
