Why on earth do you want an "eye catching" watch? Second, if you mean high-class, you shouldn't be looking for anything under $600. Third, people don't really care what kind of watch you have, you know.

Watches make very little sense these days, and RAILhead is right -- a high-class watch will cost you several hundred more than you seem to be willing to spend.

Invest in a nice mobile phone / email / organizer instead; and if you want to still feign class -- get a pocket watch and flash that when need be.

So basically, you're trying to impress people with the crap you own?

Jeez the guy asks a question, doesn't mentions the term "high class" and you guys have to jump all over it and be dicks about it.

Yes you can get a nice looking watch for under $200. There's actually a nice long thread about wristwatches in this very forum:

Hey putz, he's the one that said "eye catching" which means, inherently, he wants a watch that will do nothing but impress people. If he doesn't want to be ridiculed for silly things like that, he ought not be on TEH INTARWEBS.

"putz"?

I guess there's only one way to interpret "eye catching" (tasteless bling) and there's only one appropriate response (juvenile browbeating).

You are SO awesome on the internet.

I used putz because you thought it cool to call us "dicks".

Just trying to help. Watches are really not in general style anymore and are probably not going to impress anyone except the old-money elite and similar...at which point you're going to want to invest more than $200 if you really want eye-catching.

In my opinion, it's probably not worth the investment when time is so readily available in other expensive high-tech ways.

Fair enough. But to go off on semantics is silly. Nothing wrong with wanting a good looking watch, hell even one that is distinctive in design and "catches the eye", for $200.

Putz just made me chuckle, actually.

There's always the Think Different watch. It's a little over your $200 mark, but it definitely falls in the realm of eye-catching since it runs backwards.

the watch by m&co (designed by tibor kalman) called 5 o'clock. i like it's whimsical nature, numbers aren't really necessary to determine time, but 5 o'clock is a significant number in that it's typically quitting time, bars open, break of dawn, etc. on the back is inscribed "waste not a moment". solid stainless steel too.

Referring to what you just-after bring up: quitting time. The typical 9-to-5 working man will get the most out of this watch.

I was joking. You were derailing the thread by jumping into another one of your American values rants.

The original poster vaguely mentioned the reasoning behind desiring a watch. We offered suggestions.

Carry on, everyone.

Go after a Seiko 5 ($65) or Seiko diver automatic (approx $150). Lots of watch related posts on my blog to check out. Also look at Citizen's Eco-Drive line.

Nice, no.
Eye catching, yes.

If you really want to stand out, get a kiddie's watch. You know, like one shaped like Picachu or something.

I have had this Seiko dive watch for about a year. Its nicknamed "orange monster" and is popular with watch collectors. Its a big watch and is a 7S26 automatic, 21 jewels. Lots of reviews on the net. It definitely gets attention and while being built like a tank it can be had for about $150 on Ebay.

My humble opinion......

...watches are still cool, but you need to find something a little out of the ordinary. Forgive me for being presumptive, but the fact that you are registered on a site, which is about computer technology leads me to believe you are not that shy about spending money on electronics

Because of this, I would recommend a mechanically operated rather than battery operated wrist watch. Your budget will be a bit of a challenge though, as a few hundred dollars does not get you much. Definitely go for a Swiss mechanical watch as well!!

You could try eBay to find a vintage piece, but this is high risk. Have you thought about looking in second hand jewellery stores? They might be a little more than you wanted to pay, but if you go for a less "Chav" brand, you could pick up a bargain. I would suggest looking at the likes of Longines or IWC as they have more classic, less mainstream appeal. I am personally not a fan of the sports orientated TAG, style of watch, but a lot of people are.

Where are you based, I have a friend based in the North of England that knows someone who deals in genuine Swiss second hand watches (genuinely not stolen as well)!!

What are you looking for, something out of the ordinary, or a lot of watch for your money?

Looks pretty nice but the face is so cluttered it is hard to tell what time it is.

As for batteries I spend $5 for a new one (with install) every 2 years so that isn't really a big sell for me.

I must admit, the cost of batteries is not a big sell for me either.

To me the reason to buy a mechanical watch, is for what it represents. Its hard to believe that people have been making these things for over 200 years, and the degree of accuracy for what is en effect a load of spinning wheels and springs is incredible. Horology is an art!
