Gamers internet-wide have been reporting on a rather odd request being made of them by their PSP copies of EA's Fight Night Round 3. When attempting to go online, the game has the user register with his or her birthday and email address. After doing so, two options are presented: pay a $2 fee by credit card or agree to release your address to ESPN or other companies. While it's clearly possible to provide false information, the choice is not given until that information has already been entered; it's not a choice most gamers are accustomed to have to make.

So..either you give them yet another $2, or they sell your info. How nice. I'm betting there is no notification of this on the outside of the box, either. This would immediately result in me returning the game to the store and yelling until I got a full refund.

If they didn't offer you confidentiality, their lawyers may well be able to pin the blame on you. Even if they can weasel out of responsibility, it's still a downright lousy thing to do, though. Glad I don't play PSP or EA games.

If you think that's screwing people over badly, just look at how they treat their employees.
I know that I'll never play a game by EA. Of course, since I don't play games much anyway, I'm sure it won't hurt their bottom line any...

I learned this when I took NBA Live 06 online late last year. What really pisses me off is I only use the online function to update the rosters (which they were really lazy about this year and I ended up doing by hand anyway).

That sounds illegal. Imagine if Apple did that when installing OS X ?
