http://pages.google.com/

Google released this baby last night. It's a geocities like web editor, hoster, maker thingy. This is definitely aimed at amateurs.

The site I made to test it's features:
http://jacktse.googlepages.com/home

My thoughts:
Simple to use, works relatively easy. Easy to understand. Code is bloated for security purposes. Templates are kind of ugly. You can copy and paste from Blogger real easy. That's what I did mostly.

Too slow on my 384 DSL to be real usable.

I'm sticking with RapidWeaver.

Yeah, I'm not impressed. Doesn't look great. Very limited flexibility.
There are better blogger style services out there...

So you don't have a Gmail account ?
If you have a GMail account, you can start using it now.

Not that it's worth it...

Still getting the high demand thing, it's on the main page now... in a little box on the right side...

I get both the high demand warning and a GMail login box on the main page, but when i put in my gmail password it tells me that they're not accepting new users and i can't log in.

100 MB free hosting space without advertising? Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Do you have to use templates or can you upload whatever?

It makes the worst 1997-coded HTMl you've ever seen in your life, with DIV-infested FONT tags all over the place. Way to go, Google. You've made GeoCities look like an Einstein farm.

The test website that APU made looks okay. I don't think anyone was expecting blue chip companies to fire their web designers and replace them with this, but it looks good enough for an amateur who doesn't know HTML (like me).

One question: can you use the tools to make a webpage and then host it elsewhere? Or do the pages you make have to be hosted on your google webspace?

I did not see anything but templates — but I did not investigate it deeply yet.
