I know iTunes is drilled into everyones head BUT now that iTunes is used for more than just music such as music videos and TV shows the Tunes seems to bit too specific.

Rumors have it that Apple will offer full length movies in the near future through iTunes.

Apple was smart and made the iPod name sort of generic, perhaps they should do the same with iTunes or even change the name from Apple COMPUTER to just Apple.

What you think?

Tough call to make. iTunes is a household name (almost), so it would be a pain to re-brand it.

Also, you can buy hardware within iTunes now (well, iPods at this point in time) without opening a browser or going to apple's online store.

Not only pain, it's throwing away money. Building a brand like this costs thousands of dollars. Rebranding de-facto depreciates the value of the old brand name.

I don't see why the customers would be too confused.
Heck, people have been buying MACs and I-pods all along, and still, they get what they want. The name is more important as a brand than as a service description.

I remember how everyone was confused with the iPod name when it first came out. Looks like it was a smart move as it does way more than just music.

Movies, Music Videos, notes, calendar, address book, games and storage.

iTunes is also used for Podcasts as they and they are really popular.

They cannot change their name to just Apple - that company already exists - and is sueing Apple Computer.

Wasn't there a rumour a while ago that they were going to change iTMS's name to 'Vingle'?

No they'd just trademarked the name vingle for use regarding a video single, and I believe they already have started using it. I remember seeing an article on the NN front page a few weeks back.

They don't need to change their name from Apple Computer to Apple -- your thread title shows why.

Changing a very well established name for a products is a big fat no-no in the marketing world. There are many many people who don't use Macs, don't buy anything Apple related other than an iPod and know exactly what iTunes is and what company develops it. Then there are those who know nothing about computers or iPods but know what iTunes is. Changing the name would cause that connection to break in many cases. Bad idea. Once a brand is established and is successful (wildly successful in this case), the last thing you want to do is change the name.

So no, I don't think Apple will change the name of iTunes. And as Diggory said, they cannot change their name to simply "Apple" because of trademark issues.

Ok if they keep the iTunes name do you think they will add something to it like iTunes Extreme (As stupid as it may sound).

I think they should rename the iTunes app, but retain the name of iTunes Music Store.

Then, in this new imaginary app, there could be two seperate links within the source list: iTunes Music Store, and iVideo Store (or whatever).

That way people still buy their stuff from iTunes, so the brand is not lost. And there would be a seperate video store, which I think would remove the confusion of having to go through iTunes to find the tiny "tv shows" link.
