Canada finished with 24 olympic medals, only one behind the US, and third overall.

This was a record breaking olympics for Canada. The best we ever did before this was 17 medals in Salt Lake City.

Not bad for a country with a population less than California, huh?

Fixinated™.

And have fun with the next Winter Olympics. I predict the Canadians will take the gold in ice fishing! At least, that's what the Closing Ceremonies told me.

At least they found someone to sing for Canada who wasn't Geddy Lee or Celine Dion.

If the idiot mens hockey team had done its job, we would have hit the target of 25 medals. I know I'll be there in 2010 to cheer the boys on to gold.

Hey, don't be knocking Geddy Lee. Just because he's ugly as sin doesn't make him a bad singer.

What I want to know is why this year was such a record medal haul for the Canadians?
I mean, they should OWN in curling every four years.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.

Cindy Klassen alone won 5 medals - 16 of them by women in total. Don't know what accounts for the spike, but I did wonder that....

No; that he's a bad singer, makes him a bad singer.

I like that we got something like seven 4th-place finishes, too. Not to mention the bomb we had in aerial skiing, considering our dominance there over the past couple years.

Hopefully, this is all because governments have been giving out a little more funding? I don't know. I really think we should start giving the athletes money for winning a medal, though; they can say "winning for one's country is all the motivation an athlete needs" all they want, but put 20 large on the line and I can't imagine it not lending inspiration....

Prize money might help, but then again look at the Americans. They had their star snowboarders and skiers and they just totally wiped out. I read in NYtimes that when Miller wiped out that last time he just skied down the hill and went into his luxury trailer and left his other team members to make comments on their poor performance, even though he was the official team rep! Pretty pathetic.

.... that failed victory jump by that woman snowboarder though, will be a classic.

Geddy Lee is just awful.
"Altruism is killing America. We who want to save America must repudiate this killer, root and branch. We must understand and explain to others that the acceptance of altruism necessitates the violation of individual rights... and that the arguments for altruism are baseless..."

They won the nation ranking twice before – in Albertville 1992 and Nagano 1998 – and are generally quite good at the winter olympics (due to the Alps probably where winter sport is popular).

Canada is officially only fifth this time:

http://www.torino2006.org/ENG/IDF/MDL/MDL_Big.html

The Olympic rules lay out that the Final Rank should be based on the overall number of gold medals won.

Germany is second in the Eternal Ranking of the winter olympics with 119 gold medals, just two gold medals behind the eternal first Russia and before Noway with 103 and the USA with 78 gold medals.

Congratulations to Canada for a job well done. Our friendly neighbors to the North.

I am especially proud of our gals.

What we need now is kick the guys out of the NHL and give the job and reasonable pay to the girls.

The guys (those whiny b*****s) will have to go back on the bench and learn from the professionnelles.

When I was a kid, I thought it was the Canadian national anthem, but turned out it was just the McKenzie brothers from the Great White North (SCTV) pictured upthread and also featured in Strange Brew, a Canadian comedy classic.
