question expanding on my first post ever. I've had my Powerbook G4 for about 2 years now, and lately it's just be painfully slow. I've got through all my files, and done a lot of purging. but no difference. if i were on a PC i'd run a defrag hopefully clearing some space. I ran MacWasher, a few weeks ago, but no change, i tried to run it again today, but it froze - froze!! i feel like i'm back in OS9! I have 256MB of RAM right now. I've been poked with a stick and told I'm crazy if I don't get more. No worries, I'm ordering it. BUT i want to know, is that the best i can do, just order some more? I was told by my PC savvy boyfriend that RAM is great, but "it's not a miracle worker" he suggests doing a complete re-install of the OS, I am dreading this with a passion. I have too many programs and it would take AGES to reinstall everything.

suggestions?

Upgrading to 512MB ram will definitely help, I would recommend 1GB or more if you can afford it.

What OS version are you running?

1GB is the minimum.

If you get 1GB of memory in that sucka its gonna fly. 256 is a painfully small amount.

As for an OS re-install, I'm not sure but I doubt that would change much, I haven't had to re-install
any OS past 10.1

I believe he's thinking like a Windows geek.

I have a couple of boot disks. One with 'Drive Genius' and one with 'Disk Warrior', 'iDefrag' and 'Disk Utility' on it.

Just thought of something. Download Onyx. It's free.

Be sure to download the one for your operating system.

Ok, here's the update...

I got an extra 512 of RAM so now i have 768MB of memory. running better, but still not fabulous. i'm thinking of - gasp! - doing an "erase install"

like i mentioned i am REALLY dreading backing up and reinstalling, but it's looking like my only option. is there a better way? MAC GEEKS UNITE!!

this might be a good time to upgrade to Tiger (i have 10.2.8), thoughts? is it worth it? are "widgets" worth the $130?

They might or not be worth it. But you may be able to pick up a copy of 10.3 (panther) on the cheap. Jaguar to Panther was a night and day difference in perceived speed for me - and although your mileage may vary, a newer version of OS X may help a great deal.

You could try just doing an archive install, then visiting your hard drive with diskwarrior and defragging everything. That way you keep all your programs, accounts, and settings, but you get a clean System install. This is different from upgrading, which simply replaces some files in your system folder. But its just a thought.
