Exclusive: Apple Computer may be in the intermediate stages of developing an iTunes movie download service that would serve up full length feature films to iTunes customers with a broadband Internet connection, AppleInsider has learned.
A survey distributed this week through Coyote Insight, a Fullerton, Calif.-based market research firm, asked that participants answer a series of questions related to a potential "iTunes movie service" that would provide on-demand access to movies that could be downloaded to a computer or iPod.
"This iTunes service would provide access to 1,000 movies on demand which can be downloaded to your computer and, in turn, to your video iPod if you have one, or even your television if it is connected to your computer," read a description early in the survey.
The service would function similarly to Apple's existing iTunes download services for songs and videos with one or two differences, the survey explains: "The first difference is you would need to have a high speed (broadband) Internet connection such as DSL or cable modem to use the service. The second difference is access to the movies is offered on a monthly subscription basis."
I think the $9.99 a month subscription wouldn't be bad, depending on how it would work. $12.99 seems a bit steep for a downloaded movie. The record shop up the street sells new release dvd's for $15 the week they come out. I'd rather pay the two bucks and get the dvd.
And of course, this could just be more bunk.

I'd say it would be a hit, but a monthly fee? Hmmm... I don't know. I really hate subscription services. I'd actually like to feel like I'm owning something.

I don't think it would be worth owning a low quality video, hence subscription wouldn't be so bad.

That's what I was thinking. If I'm going to download lower quality content, I'd rather do it at $10 a month than $13 a movie.

I will have to see what's the available library before hooking up with a subscription service. If they have every movie ever made in the U.S., plus all iTunes video content, including full show seasons, I'd pay $10 a month.
In other words, how good is an all-you-can-eat-buffet if they only have macaroni salad?

It would depend on the movies they had. If they end up having all the titles that Netflix has (at least the ones I'm interested in) then I would drop Netflix in favor of a movie subscription service.

Oh the other hand, do you want to spend $20 on a DVD that you only will watch once or twice. Like renting, this would give you a chance to see it before you drop $20 on it. If you watch 3 to 4 movies in a month, this would be worth it.

For me, it all depends upon how it's offered. I'm not about to get all excited about downloading 320 x 240 videos when I've come to expect DVD quality. Also, I don't think Apple can offer such a service without creating a Airport AV or something to connect to the stereo. I'm also suspect of receiving stereo only movies.
Oh well, perhaps I'm not their target audience.
What would be cool is if they offered a HD option... and a device that would output HDMI, but I'm dreaming...
