I, for one, can't wait to watch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on a 4-inch diagonal screen.

That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

I want to rip my own damn dvds. I have over 400. A "subscription service" for a damn monthly fee would piss me off to no end.

I posted this in the other thread:

Screen diag___Aspect ratio____Screen dimensions___Dimensions with 0.25" bevel

4"________________4:3_____________2.4" x 3.2"______________2.9" x 3.7"
4"_______________16:9 ____________2.0" x 3.5"______________2.5" x 4.0"

The current iPod is 2.4" x 4.1". Obviously a 4" 4:3 screen is too big for this purpose, but a 4" 16:9 screen would fit almost perfectly. To make it fit the exact width of the 5G iPod, they'd either just have to remove 0.05" of bevel off two sides, or else make the screen very slightly smaller.

3.9"_____________16:9 ____________1.9" x 3.4"______________2.4" x 3.9"

Now if this is true, then the question is what the resolution of those rumoured full-length movies would be. 480x272 (like on the PSP) would be acceptable, and 640x360 would rawk.

I still don't think I like the idea of a click screen.

I already dislike the current click wheel because it's so easy to accidently "wander" off the middle button and cause some random movement with the wheel. The total lack of "feedback" from a click screen is a major disadvantage, IMO.

But: Eug's rendering look sexay

Other options if you are going to make the screen that big?

Thumb scrollers on the side wouldn't look "iPod clean" or stick with the basic circular shape that is a part of the identity of the iPod.

Possibly a pop-out bottom like some phones have, but more moving parts = more trouble.

I'd prefer the on-screen.

Plus, the added bonus that it could be software-updated to add controls for other things... web browser software, anyone? (Of course that would require a wireless connection in the new iPod, but I can be hopeful.)

I, for one, never really got all twitterpated about watching videos on an iPod - music, movies, TV, whatever. I have bought TV episodes to watch on my computer, though.

here's an idea. What if there were two screens? One 2.5" on the back with a click wheel, and then the full size screen on the other side? The one screen would play for movies, the other for music and what not. you get the best of both worlds... and something like a $600 price tag.

Maybe they could do the click screen if they made a click remote. I also like the feedback of having a physical click wheel. In fact, I was pretty partial to the original iPod with the moving wheel. But progress and what not. I don't want to have to look at my iPod while I'm driving to just press the next button.

The problem with touchscreen is that you have to lift your finger for each click where on the current ones you can leave it seated and click over and over.

The other problem is with my nano I can operate it without talking it out of my bag or pocket as I can feel my way around the click wheel, no dice with a touchscreen.

I don't know about the rest of you, but apart from on planes, when would anyone have the time to watch a movie on the go? And even then you'd probably be taking your laptop with you anyway. Unless you have the most ridiculous commute on public transport (i.e. you're not concentrating on driving), I can't see much real-world use for a movie-iPod.

So what's the point of the 5G iPod and iTunes video downloads then?

The point of that is that it's mainly for TV shows and iMovies. If you have a half-hour commute then you can watch a TV show, or you can use it to show your iMovies to friends. Many people often have half an hour to kill. However, a movie is a two hour, immersive experience.
As has been pointed out before, the 5G iPod is more of a music iPod which happens also to have video. It's a nice extra feature, I'm not saying it shouldn't be on there. But I can't see the point of an iPod intended primarily for watching films.

Fingerprints. Ick. Also, just think of all the scratches that surface area can hold And if it's touch sensitive, we can most likely say goodbye to any protection in the form of 'skins' for the screen area at least (which defeats the purpose).

My commute is a 1:15 each way, totally on transit. If the battery lasted 2 hours going full-on watching video, I could just recharge when I got to work, watching most of it there and the rest on the way home.

Not that I would, I prefer just listening to music and reading.
