MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) -- Police are looking for the man who stole a jar full of cash donations meant for a nine-year-old upstate New York girl who went blind from a brain tumor.

A video surveillance camera at the Getty gas station and convenience store in Middletown captured the theft on the morning of February 18.

The videotape shows a man in a baseball cap walking into the store, grabbing the clear plastic jar from the checkout counter and walking out.
The manager -- the only employee in the store -- says he was busy cooking food during the brief time the man was there.

Police say there was at least $100 in the jar.

The donations were collected for Marcell Henderson, who has undergone two surgeries and faces the possibility of a third. She was just six-months-old when doctors discovered she had a brain tumor.

The store manager says the thief "must be heartless.''

I can't believe someone would do this. What a lowlife.

Ultimately, so what. People will hear about it, contribute, and in the end a ton of money will be raised... more so than if it hadn't happened.

The thief is an unwitting tool of charity. Besides being a witless tool, of course.

That's what I was thinking too. It could be the best thing that could have ever happened. Once the local news gets a hold of the story the cash will come flying in from everywhere.

Maybe her dad stole it.

Such inhumanity to another human being. A thief that deserves punishment. Hopefully he will be caught. Needs to be put to hard labor and triple the money for her.
