Lisa Pierot dies.

There isn't anything I can say about Lisa that she can't say better herself at her own online site. She is funny, honest, remarkable, and just so beautiful inside and out that her soul just had to burst out and rise to the heavens.

Pick any article she wrote - you can visit her site here - and you will admire Lisa.

Everyone here has been affected by cancer in some way, it seems, and in Lisa's writings she embraces all of the minute experiences that millions of cancer survivors before her have also shared.

I think when her mother died of the same disease - which her sister also shares - that she just decided that she wanted to go with her mother sooner rather than later. After all, it makes sense doesn't it?

Mom always makes the bad things seem better, doesn't she?

Be grateful for the mother in your life, whether it is your own mother, the mother of your children, or your father or mother's mother.

Call them today and just tell them, "I love you."

I'm tired and sad, but thanks for reading.

in Lisa's memory.

Hi Cody,

Thank you for posting about Lisa. My prayers with her family and friends. May her faith now have her with God, also that she is with her mother again.

She seemed to be an awesome lady. One that cared and drew strength from her readers. I think that she will be greatly missed as well as her writing columns.

Thanks, WD.

Cancer is just one of those things that we need to eradicate. I wish the world could have peace and we could use all of the world's resources to help the world's people be healthy and happy.

On the more serious side, I have a friend I went to high school with who last I heard is recovering from cancer (his family is very quiet about what is going on). Also, I have a friend who is going through the process of being diagnosed with cancer. We can only hope for a negative result, but sadly the doctors seem pretty confident that he has cancer, and that if he does it is most likely a terminal cancer.

Sorry to hear about the loss.

Why has the lounge suddenly become Obituary Central? It's kinda morbid, and irrelevant to most folks here...

It's yet another stage in the public, communal nature of personal expression that seems particularly trenchant in American culture.

My pet theory is that we have become such a compulsively "confessional" culture that people find it hard not to share ALL the details of their life, important or otherwise. Plus, I think it touches on America's culture of communal validation. If an experience is shared and validated with a community it somehow becomes more real.

Just look at the phenomena Survivor started on TV. With reality TV now, especially all those competition shows, people are sharing their stories and struggles with the TV-viewing public while simultaneously giving that voyeuristic public the chance to get involved and "validate" the performer's experience with a vote for their favorite participant.

It's like this bizarre form of participatory theatre where the content is "real life experiences" but the performer needs to have the experience validated by an audience before it gets to seem real to them.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.
