If the rumors are correct (4" screen, 16:9 aspect, same form factor) then this is what I suspect the real video iPod will look like.

Can one even sit far enough away from a 4" screen to need a remote?

I'm not an iPod person, I've owned them from the beginning, but find that I really never use it. I'd love to have that thing though! Watching Earl and The Office would be awesome.

An on-screen click-wheel is a very dumb (though cool) idea.

Your fingers can learn to slide on a real click-wheel by themselves. Operating an on-screen click-wheel would require hand-eye coordination: too much effort for the task.

For skip song, pause and volume you really need to look at the screen?

There's no real way to 'feel' on a touchscreen where buttons are, unlike a physical click-wheel, where you can easily tell the difference between the wheel and its surroundings

That's what I keep saying but someone always makes a bad joke when I do.

My mind's as deep in the gutter as I'll let it go, but I can't come up with a solid joke.

So, with that widescreen iPod video, will Apple add it to the line or replace the current 4:3 iPod video? I could think that they drop the price of the 5g and add the new one as higher priced model, maybe only in one HD size in the beginning.

I agree, but I can't think of a way around it without increasing the size or clunkiness of the unit.

My guess is that it would be $499, with an 80 GB hard drive.

In case you would want to hook it to a TV.

Operating a touch-screen click wheel would be trivially easy to learn. It's pretty easy to trace a circle with your fingertip. Try it on a tabletop for instance--easy. I speak from experience, having a full face invisible shield on my Nano effectively takes away all tactile feel from the scroll wheel and the buttons. It's every bit as easy to operate as a regular iPod.

Actually I had an invisible shield on my Nano also, it covered the whole front with a smooth surface and I found it much harder to use.

Without a sticker on it you can feel the borders of the scroll wheel and do it without looking, a touchscreen will not.

I ended up replacing my nano's shield within a month with one with the scroll wheel cut out, it's much better for me.

I agree that with the shield, you can't feel the location of the buttons. I have to look at the iPod to operate it. But with a video iPod, won't you be looking at it anyway?

Yes, but having to look is another downside in itself.

At any rate I still want a touchscreen iPod but I am just worried about the usability.

I can see the posts that rant about completely scratched and greasy screens and crappy working touchscreens already.

Maybe the iPod will have some sort of crystal or tempered glass screen. Though that wouldn't do much for the fingerprints.

One thing for sure, I love the fakes and want a real one.

That's just for one, right? I hear that they need to be paired for optimal performance.

Are there really touch screens out there that are thin enough to sit in an iPod ?
