Is there any service like blogger.com for webpages? By that I mean foolproof and free? I want to start a webpage but I don't know how and don't want to spend any money.

What do you want your website to communicate? What are your goals? Is this a personal website, or business related?

You are going to have to be FAR more detailed if you want helpful advice.

Just spend a lil money and buy iWeb. Then all you'll need is a host and a domain name, or you could drop $99 for a years worth of iDisk.

But really, if you're just wanting something for a blog and some pics just use myspace.com.

I want something minimalistic. A simple text archive for personal use. I would actually prefer if it were virtually graphics-free. To be more specific, I have a bunch of word documents I want to store on-line. Blogger works, if I publish each document like a post, but the problem is, it only displays the last 10 posts (documents) which makes navigation a headache.

How many Word documents do you plan to post? At some point, it seems inevitable that you'd want to move the text off the main page and into the archive. Does the search mechanism work in Blogger?

There are several other free blog sites, and free blog software you can use yourself.

I think that having your on website is a great idea. I wish you all the best. Just investigate your options.

Wordpress, My Space and Blogger are easy free tools.

If you want a text archive for personal use, you should protect the website from being seen by anyone but you.

Why have a webpage when you can post your every thought, whim, and rant right here?

/not_helpful

If you've got an old machine, you can actually host your own small web server free from your broadband connection. This page can show you how.

I just noticed a footnote from that Lifehacker article:

Sorry Mac folks, but OS X comes with a web server all set up, so this tutorial’s not for you.
Could you take advantage of that feature, perhaps? Sounds foolproof to me...

Eh, I guess compared to Blogger, you're right.

But you get like a million geek points if you host your own server.

WP features one click install. It's about as simple to install as it gets.

Well, thanks for letting me know my options.

Still, it's quite disappointing there isn't some blogger-like service for webpages. After all, the difference between a blog and a basic webpage (the kind I want) is only really the formatting. I live in hope there will be such a service eventually.

By the way, why isn't iWeb (and Macmail, for that matter) a part of iLife, i.e. free? If you buy the hardware, the software should come free. It would promote the popularity of the software by spreading Apple's logo and aesthetic through the Internet, and probably increase sales and profits in the long-run.

iWeb does come with iLife '06.

Huh ?

Are you talking about getting a wordpress account (at wordpress.com) or downloading and the wordpress software from wordpress.org and installing it on your OWN server ?

The former is easy, the latter far from on-click. Using FTP to upload it to a server is more than he'd probably know how to do...

iWeb is part of iLife, which is *not* part of the OS. It's bundled with new Macs but if you want to update your older version to iLife '06, you'll have to spend the $79.
