The last Apple special event was lame in my opinion. Why have a special event for iMac Mini that have new Intel chips when it's the same design. And the iPod Hi-Fi is less than exciting.

I was just wondering how apple determines what deserves to have an event to annouce a product, as opposed to just quietly releasing it on a Tuesday.

I remember the ibook G4 came out without much fan fair. So did the mighty mouse.

Apple final releases a two button mouse. Now to me that deserves an event more than the Hi-Fi or new mac mini.

Do you find some of their choices odd?

Ok, we had other threads discussing this before. Why a new one ?

Anyways, many analysts think that Apple planned to present more, but changed it last minute.
Like iTMS video, but maybe a major deal to bring content to the stores fell through at short notice.

Don't underestimate the importance of the Intel Mac minis with Front Row for potential switchers.

But it didn't need a special event, none of these potential switchers would be giving a crap about an Apple special event. It could easily just have been a standard announcement/press release, and the press outlets would have picked up on it and maybe made it sound more significant than it does with everyone talking about how much a letdown the event was.

Hmm.. if what what_the_heck said is true, Apple seems to have a lot of last minute changes before public announcments recently.

That's exactly what it looks like. Something didn't get finalized in time.

People it didn't get a webcast... it obviously wasn't meant to be taken as big as it was.

Weird reasoning. Same applied to the Macworld in SF...

Apple announces its products when they are ready. We have the chance to enjoy them.

Actually, this event was designed to garner the attention of the press.

A simple press release will NOT gather the same media attention. Press releases come in four dozen a day.

I don't know if anyone really touched on my main point--

Not whether or not the current things they released deserved their own special event, but if they do if for that stuff, why would they not do it for other products that most would consider more important.

I'm just saying, what is their logic behind it? I'm sure it makes sense. But why quietly release the ibook G4 with no fan fair, but have a big event for the Mac Mini ( a very similar situation).

They don't seem to be consistant.

No.

The switch to Intel is vastly more important to the NON-MAC-USING public than switching the iBook from one processor nobody's ever heard of to another nobody's ever heard of.

Just a follow-up:

http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/03/...ac.mini.media/

The Intel iMac is making waves in the media, justifying its placement in a (more or less) dedicated media event.
