I don't know how this affects Apple's "digital media" future and the switch to Intel CPUs (if at all), but its interesting to see what close ties Intel and MS actually have. The Viiv certification process (as said in this article), will automatically disqualify OSX and Linux, since the Windows Media Edition Premium blablabla is required.

It's just a requirement for the branding, and I bet Apple could care less about the branding.

This allows Intel to enforce which technologies are supplied in entertainment PCs and thereby guarantee a minimum user experience.
Computer manufacturers are allowed to use the Viiv logo if their devices meet certain criteria. A computer requires an Intel dual-core processor and remote control, and has to run Windows Media Center Edition to qualify.
Kind of like having the Apple logo guarantees a minimum user experience?

Wasn't the Mini "media centre" supposed to have this chip?

Thats what I read a while back, IIRC. Any-who, reading more into it at Intel's site, it seems that this technology encompasses a wide range of media companies, where Intel is doing the negotiation part and provides every kind of media in a single swoop (read application) to the consumer.

Viiv isn't a chip...it's an Intel brand for a certain few components in a system...same principle as "Centrino".

I will trust Apple to make the correct decision.

Basically, ViiV is a trademark masquerading as a standard. This makes it very dangerous.

Yes.
Windows Media Player is a proprietary system, masquerading as a "standard," too.

Windows Media is a bit different though. Windows Media is actually a piece of software. At best, Viiv is marketing fluff just to tell a consumer that the PC they are buying is indeed multimedia ready. In other words, all Viiv really is is a name. I doubt Apple would want to brand their Macs with a marketing name from Intel anyway.

Viiv = Intel chips same as Apple already has, with Software Intel approves and or makes. If Apple WANTED in on being able to call their things Viiv they would certainly be allowed to. Thing is Apple doesn't want in on that. They don't seem to be entirely interested in promoting Intel as much as they are promoting Apple. They don't even use the standard intel badges on their products. Apple enjoys the advantages they have by partnering with Intel. But I think Steve has learned the harsh lesson that sometimes you just need to be willing to trust nobody else.
