NFL Notes: Culpepper traded to Dolphins
By Seattle Times news services

The Minnesota Vikings confirmed on Tuesday that they have traded Daunte Culpepper, their frustrated and injured Pro Bowl quarterback, to the Miami Dolphins. Minnesota will receive a second-round draft pick in next month's NFL draft as compensation.

Culpepper didn't immediately respond to an interview request.

The 11th overall pick of the Vikings in the 1999 NFL draft, Culpepper's seven-year tenure with the team included three Pro Bowl appearances.

But after a disappointing start to his 2005 season, Culpepper tore three of four ligaments in his right knee Oct. 30 against the Carolina Panthers, and his attempts to upgrade the 10-year, $102 million contract he signed in 2003 have been rebuffed by the Vikings.

Culpepper said last Wednesday that Vikings management sent him a "disturbing e-mail" that prompted him to request a trade or his release. That night, after learning of his e-mail correspondence to news outlets, the Vikings aggressively started shopping him to other clubs, including the Dolphins and the Oakland Raiders.

"Anything we do is contingent upon a player passing a medical exam," Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said.

Miami released last year's starter, Gus Frerotte, who would have cost the team $4.38 million against the salary cap.

Didn't Baltimore prove you don't need a Joe Montana or Tom Brady to win a SuperBowl?
Just as long as the system is sound AROUND the QB and the QB works within the system and just does his job and minimizes his mistakes the team can win.

Without a playmaker at wide receiver just who was Daunte supposed to throw to? So, without that STAR playmaker on the team Daunte tried to do a little bit more. To give it a little bit extra to make up for Randy Moss' loss. Not the best thing for his effectiveness, but last year was truly strange for ALL the Vikes!

So, a fresh start is probably good for him and I wouldn't be surprised to see Daunte rebound from the 2005 fiasco year.

And as far as the Dolphins are concerned, I like Gus Frerotte as a guy, but c'mon who WOULDN'T take Culpepper over Gus? Miami is improved at QB with this move...as long as he's healthy.

well i wish him the best of luck - it was good for both parties involved - i'm glad to see him go but dont really care either way - it would have been funny to see him play for the vikings when he really didnt want to be there

The vikings basically gave him away. I find it difficult to believe that the best offer out there was a 2nd round pick for daunte..

I see Nick Saben getting the Dolphins a Super Bowl championship within the next 5 years. The guy is a god. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a Baton Rouge native. Or maybe I am.

Not because he isn't any good, but because everyone knew the Vikings didn't want him.

Trades in the NFL are almost never equal value trades in terms of playing ability. I think it has to do with the way that contracts are structured. Usually when a team is "trading" a star player, they are really doing it to get rid of their contract and get more room under the salary cap.

Without Daunte (other than the Green Bay win).

I think Daunte will do well in Miami as long as he gets healthy enough. For the Vikings, it's just nice to have a fresh start on everything, even if it is rocky the first year.

Yeah motivation does wonders for a team. He wasn't the only one at the party.

So he had a bad year. It happens. Being they have no receivers he forced a lot of things he shouldn't have. Overall hes a solid QB that will help out Miami a lot. I'm sure he'll bounce back fine as he gets used to the system they run.

No way Culpepper was going to Oakland with Randy Moss still there. I was kind of hoping the raiders pick up Drew Brees but now that he is a N.O. Saint, we have a chance of picking up a good quarterback in the draft.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

You have every reason to be optimistic. I have heard nothing but RAVES and GLOWING reports about him!
