When is enough is enough… Blockbuster subsidiary in Spain had to close their doors today due to the rampage level of piracy in Quixote's country.

Jerks will be always jerks no matter the tech involved.

OH NOES.

NO PROFITEZ FOR TEH SHAREHOLDEREZ!!

OH NOES.

Why can't they adopt the net as a distribution model? I mean, give me movies for 1.99$ in H264 and I'll pay for them. **** boxes, **** leaflets. That's a ****ing waste of petroleum and trees IMHO.
Of course, no one will say they close because they're an old style business and don't embrace new technologies, unless they boost profits up.

WELL **** THEM!

And where are the hugely successful companies using the Net to rent movies?

What's your point ?

The movie industry doesn't allow / want it (yet), it's not a matter of technology that digital distribution is not happening.

Screw Blockbuster. They've been ripping people off for years. Then people like NetFlix come along and totally destroy Blockbuster's business model. So instead of blaming themselves, Blockbuster blames its customers. HAHA! Serves you right Blockbuster! Time to eat the sh!t you've been shoveling all these years.

Our local Blockbuster just closed its doors and left town recently. I rejoiced. I agree with ambush, in that all I need is an online service that will allow me to purchase movies from home, no packaging, no stores, no idiot store clerks, no ridiculous late fees, no waiting for some loser to return the movie you want to watch.

WTF, maroma. I mean, if you don't like Blockbuster, ok, don't be their customer. But your personal beef seems to go way beyond that...

I'd be READY to pay up to 5 dollars for this: 700mb H264 movie, no extra material, no extra ****. Download on the net from iTunes or legal P2P. I can burn up to 3 copies. JPG high-res artwork included.

Actually, Blockbuster has an Internet service similar to Netflix that fits what you want.

I'm actually looking for something along the lines of what Apple has been toying with lately. I want to download my movies, not wait for them to come in the mail. I want zero packaging, zero discs. I want to have those movies I purchase in my library until I decide to delete them. NetFlix is nice, but not my ideal service.

Thank you. I wonder though how they calculate their losses due to piracy. Is this an estimate of films downloaded over the internet + films bought from Africans at the beach.. etc?

Movie piracy is bad, for sure, but sales of DVDs are rising. Perhaps the renting of DVDs isn't, but blaming that on piracy.. well. OK whatever.

Blockbuster seems to be estimating a loss due to piracy while at the same time FNAC and Corte ingles are selling more DVDs each year. Perhaps it is their business model that doesn't work?

Just thinking out loud here.

cheers

I hate both sides...

I hate people that think it's "cool" to pay nothing for something (stealing music and movies)...

... and I hate the corporations that make me feel like a thief for not letting me use things I buy the way I want to use them.

screw that. then you have to archive it yourself, which looks nowhere near as nice as retail packaging, not to mention the fact that 700meg h.264 is laughable. HD content is coming, requiring MUCH more space.
