"CNET found similar results with other players with WMA DRM drastically reducing battery life by up to around 20%. Apple's FairPlay DRM seems to have less of an effect with battery life being reduced by around 8% when compared with MP3 playback."

Anything that doesn't have a direct impact on actually playing the music will use up battery power and processor cycles, reducing both battery life and overall performance. If FairPlay is "well behaved," and thus uses less cycles, it will use less power and impact the player less. But it's still something I'm not asking for the player to do, so i don't like it.

That is, unfortunately, completely meaningless.

The test for iPods would be with AAC files of equal compression rates, with and without DRM.

Comparing it to mp3 is completely irrelevant because better codecs (and AAC *is* a better codec) generally also mean higher processing power requirements, which in the case of a power-stepped CPU obviously translates to higher power consumption.

They compared WMA with DRM with mp3 and AAC with DRM with mp3. Idiots.

They were comparing different codecs and inferring that the difference is because of DRM? What the hell are they smoking?

That's like saying, "We compared a Toyota Prius driven by a man to a Mitsubishi Mirage driven by a woman and found that men get better gas mileage out of cars."

You mean anyone who purposely avoids upgrading past iTunes 5? Because you can't currently strip the DRM from songs purchased with iTunes 6 and higher, unless you burn to audio CD and then rip the songs again. But that's a pain in the ass, and you either lose audio quality or you end up with huge files.

So what was your point again?

Windows DRM is bad for the environment.
