Seriously, a lot of our FBI agents here in this country do not have email accounts because they don't have the budget for them.
Link.
Senator Charles Schumer called for better access to technology for agents.
"The FBI should have the tools it needs to fight terrorism and crime in the 21st century, most of all in New York City, and one of the most effective means of communications is e-mail and the Internet," he said.
"FBI agents not having e-mail or Internet access is much too much a pre-9/11 mentality."
Unbelievable.

Call your congressman-they are the ones that dole out the money to every single government program. Really. Mad about that stupid "bridge to nowhere" in Alaska while Medicare is underfunded? Upset that bridges on interstate highways are falling apart while congressmen get to lease luxury cars and bill the Federal government for them? Let your congressman know!

I know I do, ghporter, but you know what?
Doesn't seem to make any difference.
Whether it's local politicians who won't put up a stoplight at a local intersection that is known to be dangerous and a cause of many accidents - including schoolbuses - until a child has actually DIED, or the bigwigs in D.C., they just don't give a damn.

If only a few people gripe, they'll get ignored. If EVERYBODY gripes, they become a voting bloc and get a lot of attention. TAKE BACK YOUR GOVERNMENT! Start with those local pols who don't listen when the citizens complain about a dangerous intersection and run the bastiges out of office (and/or town). They MUST listen to you, and it's a lot easier to organize on the local level as a start.

Now, forgive me for being a bit stupid on this one, but when I add email accounts to my server it costs precisely: $0.00.

More accounts mean more admin time, more server storage space and more traffic, all of which cost (albeit not much) money. The real pain with this is that congress has not seen fit to fulfill the FBI's requested budget since they started submitting one, yet they place the internal defense of the U.S. squarely in the FBI's lap. You must pay for what you want or do without, so what does that say about our lawmakers' priorities?

I would have thought that an additional 2,000 email addresses could be had for about $1,500 (hardware and software) one-off plus $50 per month (bandwidth). It's not like email is a huge bandwidth hog, is it?
Unless they're using Windows. They're probably using Windows. So scrap the above comments.

Unfortunately there are people, even in here, that think that electing a government gives them a free pass to do whatever they want - no compromise, our implicit consent granted upon electing them.
Secondly, apathy is everywhere.
I can see Cody Dawg's point of view... even if it is cynical it seems to be true. What is the point? Seems like a waste of time

Hi Cody,
I'm here everyday. Checking see if you are here.
I so much miss our chats.
There are just so many crazy things going on, I just don't know what to think. Just plain crazy. Both sides are after political gain. Ending with nothing being done.

To be honest, it's not THAT simple.
You'd need some sophisticated access authorization system. That alone (card readers, access cards etc.) will cost tons.

The polarization within this country is ripping us apart! Some friends of mine saw this documentary about this subject:

Looks very interesting.

That's true, although this country seems to be pretty far behind in embracing OSS and open standards too.

Yeah, it used to be okay.
But if the competition (the crooks and criminals including kiddie porn bastards) have it then so should the FBI.

There are very good reasons for not having any thing in writing. Foreign governments could read the messages and defendants could subpoena the email. sam

Unbelievable.
For once (ok, maybe for the second time) I agree with Cody. Something fundamentally is broken with our government.
IMHO, its the fault of the current administration... but that's a thread for another time (and another forum).
