A hotel in Germany has started charging its guests by the pound for an overnight stay, according to a Local 6 News report.

http://www.local6.com/news/8160871/detail.html

The hotel owner in the town of Norden, Juergen Heckrodt, said he was continually getting overweight guests, so he decided to make them step on the scales to determine room costs.

The hotel requires guests to pay half a euro or 61 cents per 2.2 pounds, according to a Reuters report.

The report said that the move appears to be working with returning guests.

"Much to (Heckrodt's) surprise, the guests were thinner on their next visit," according to the report.

Heckrodt said he hopes his initiative will inspire others to lose weight too and live longer.
The hotel does not turn anyone away who refuses to step on the scales. If they do refuse, they are charged a regular room rate -- without a discount.

......

won't be long before the EU steps in to protect the "rights" of the obese.

hehehe, you don't think there won't be a fuss about this?

I think it is a great idea. Would love to see it used by airlines, where it would actually make sense due to increased fuel consumption to haul the heavy folk.

I don't understand how a hotel can justify the costs for weight. I mean if it was a transport vehicle I could understand but how do fat people cost the hotel more?

Of course that owner is overstepping his limits and it is none of his business what a guest looks like and people should stop going to his hotel and he should go bankrupt.

What ? That coming from somebody living in the land of the free ? (Well, technically, you are not. Is Canada free ? )

The business owner can do whatever he wants. If he wants to serve only siamese twin-dwarfs, then he can. WTF ?

That's BS. What about people like me who are just large? I'm 6'5" and 260. Sure, I'm overweight, but even when I am at my ideal weight I still weigh a lot.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

It's not that expensive, unless you weigh like 400 pounds or something.

That news report is all FUD.

1) The charge-by-pound is OPTIONAL !
It's a special promotion between 03/15 and 04/10/06 !

2) Here is the real hotel:

Should be based on girth as well. I'd love to see a person size checker much like the carryon size checker. If you are greater than X" wide, then you pay for two seats. It sucks when the person next to you is also in 15% of your seat because they just don't fit. It's not really discrimination, it's just that airlines are selling space, so pay for what you consume.

You can hardly call that a hotel... A B&B (Bed & Breakfast for those who doesn't know ) would be a more fitting description. In fact it looks a bit like my parents house.

That sounds just plain silly.
