Alienware makes great stuff, but one can build their own high-performance PC for cheaper. I think that Alienware will slowly become crap if it is terribly fundamentally integrated into Dell. If they stay their own brand, just with Dell ownership, I would still trust them.

I predict the price will not go down, but it will still compromise the quality of the machines…

Weren't upgrades for Alienware to some extent free? Or lifetime guarantee?

I believe that that is a distinct possibility.

Unfortunately I don't think either will happen. I think Dell will leverage the brand name and industrial design to keep costs higher while changing the components and manufacturing process to match their current consumer lineup. I think the components will be better than average, as I suspect they will be marketed to gaming and performance enthusiasts, but one could do far better by going to a specialty dealer or building a system from scratch.

Meh. Alienware stuff is fugly anyways. I don't see this acquisition changing that.
Perhaps this is just Dell's way of getting into the AMD market.

I don't see how this purchase helps Dell vs. Alienware. I own a Voodoo PC BTW, and use it for gaming.
On the other hand, this upcoming Pro Mac could be quite the gaming machine, and at a price comparable to a gaming computer. It's quite possible games will be much easier to port over to Mac OS X now that they are on Intel. Since they'll be able to boot into Windows, games will be able to play their games on the Pro Mac in either case.
The reason for owning a Voodoo was for gaming. Everything practical I do on my Mac. If Apple can now boot into Windows, I can integrate everything I want into one purchase.
With that said, I still don't see how Dell buying Alienware helps vs. Apple. Brand recognition? Apple has more brand recognition then does Dell, and Dell has more brand recognition then does Alienware.

"Quite possible" is quite an exaggeration, I think. Being on Intel is not going to suddenly turn OS X's system libraries into Windows' system libraries.

I'd like to seem some "Unpimp your PC" Apple ads.

At the very least, shouldn't it be easier for video card developers to make compatible video cards? That would certainly help the gaming situation.

I guess, but I don't think the problem has ever been that Macs weren't powerful enough to play games — devs just don't want to put the effort into porting them. Look at MMOGs: World of Warcraft isn't amazingly less taxing on the GPU than the rest of the field, but it's almost the only game in Mac Town. That's because Blizzard is one of the few game developers that is committed to the Mac platform.
I'd like to think that the Intel switch will improve the gaming situation, but I really just don't see it.
