MacRumors
They say that Apple will launch an iPod with phone functions within the next few months. "An iPod phone is definitely coming. BenQ will not be making it as we are in competition with Apple however several of our suppliers have been approached to manufacture parts. Among manufacturers in Taiwan it is common knowledge."
"An iPod with phone functions."... Somehow I can't see Apple splitting the iPod line into iPod, nano, video , shuffle and phone, its too much. So with the statement above, I was thinking that the video iPod might be the same thing as the iPhone. It could work if they put a mic in the headphones cable, like on a wired phone headset, or put the phone in a widget on the cable like the iPod Radio Remote.

iPhone is a VOIP product owned by Nuvio.

iPhone is also an apple-owned domain and trademark in Australia and was attempted to be trademarked in Canada. It was challenged in Canada. What is likely to happen is that Apple will come up with a different name, or will negotiate with Nuvio and the other opponents.

Ok so it won't be called an iPhone, call it an Apple phone then.

iPod
iPod shuffle
iPod nano
iPod photo
iPod mini
iPod phone
I don't see Apple wanting to go another direction when the iPod brand name is so strong.

All I hope is that the phone will look like an iPod nano. That'd be the coolest ever.

Could you imagine holding something as large as an iPod up to your face? I'd assume the two are entirely different products, if either is true at all.

I can imagine it because people hold bigger phones up to their heads now, namely the Treo. It is freaking huge.

If it ever does come out, I'm sure it would be very compact. Not only considering Apple's minimalism, it would most likely not have a camera and a removable battery, which reduces a lot of bulk right there.
I'm really curious though, as to how they'll make the SIM card serviceable by the user, if at all. Any way you cut it, they'd have to add something to the iPod design (door/slot) that has never been necessary.
And the controls. Would they have a small scrollwheel and a number keypad? Or would it be just the scroll wheel? They could justify that by saying that most users dial by selecting from the phonebook, and adding a dial screen where you select numbers sort of the way you currently set the time or the Screen Lock on current iPods. That would totally kill the possibility of using your phone to send text messages though. At least I couldn't imagine how you could type a message using just the scroll wheel and menus.
Either way, if and when Apple introduces their own phone, it certainly will be very different than anything out there.
