A freind is looking for a decent and close to free as possible, simple editing software for his PC. Anyone know of any free to very low cost software besides XP's craptastic Movie Maker software?

Free? No idea.

Vegas is great, one of the best editors ever, but the pro version might be a bit overkill for someone wanting a 'simple' solution. There's an $89 'movie studio' home version that's stripped down and may fit the simplicity/cheap bill.

For $100, Premiere Elements 2 is surprizingly good. It packs a lot of features you'd expect to find only in Premiere Pro. Just have a system with a LOT of RAM, and a pretty decent processor. It's lightning fast with a dual core processor. On an older system with less RAM it's sluggish.

Go with Avid's free version. Avid is pretty much THE video editing software for a lot of production companies. It works well, doesn't demand much more than you'd expect of a good video-equipped computer, and it has a lot of features.
