The tropical fish experiment ended last year after about 10 months. After a while we just couldn't keep them alive for more than a couple of weeks.
Now the kids want a turtle. The pre-school classroom has two and they like them. I remember reading something once about Salmonella being a problem?
Anyway, what do you feed them? I'm not interested in any pet that requires me to feed them insects or anything nasty. ;-(
Anything else notable about turtles/tortoises as a pet?
Thanks in advance!

Get a turtle, NOT a tortoise. Tortoises' don't move much.

I used to have a red-eared slider turtle (RIP, Jenny ) Anywho, she was a great pet! Got her in Chinatown (NY) I think technically they're illegal that small (maybe a quarter o half - dollar size whn i got her). Make sure they have a heater in the tank. About 3/4 water in the tank with a little island for them to "bask" on. Feed them turtle pellets, small fish, freeze dried crickets, and they love shrimp treats. (You can find this stuff at any pets store.) TIP: Jenny died because we gave her some sick fish... damn pet store... so watch where you're buying the fish from, make sure thy're a trusted source.
Yeah, about the salmonella, just wash your hands after picking them up, you should be fine. If you do get an aquatic turtle, keep in mind the kids shouldn't pick it up and leave it out of the tank for too long.
let us know how it goes!!

Get a snake. They eat cute fuzzy mice instead of nasty insects.

Had red-eared sliders ever since I was like 12 years.
Cutest things in the world.
Google for them, you'll find tons of information about them and how to have them as pets.

How old are your kids ? Wouldn't recommend turtles for kids under age of 8 or so. They (turtles) are quite fragile when they are babies and "teens".
