"Scientists have made one of the most important fossil finds in history: a missing link between fish and land animals, showing how creatures first walked out of the water and on to dry land more than 375m years ago."

There was this lady on the bus who didn't believe in evolution. It came up because another person on the bus had a National Geographic on it. The lady borrowed it and read it.

Lady: You know... evolution is a theory with no proof. Darwin made it up because he looked like a monkey as a kid. Look at him! : points to picture : Look's like a monkey. Anyway, they have no proof at all, it's just some made up thing.
: lady looks at pictures in article :
Lady: Oh... so... they.. actually found bones? Well, they say they are 2 million years old... but... you know... carbon dating is... inaccurate. They can't even get accurate dates from fabric. This was found in Europe! There are still predators in Europe. And they could look like this. These are just European predator bones.

I swear, some people and the lengths they go through to assume things they know nothing about, make up stories about something they know nothing about, and then continue to make really flawed reasoning when they are confronted with proof.

The find is the first complete evidence of an animal that was on the verge of the transition from water to land.
Oh purleese!! You're telling me that they've never found crocodile bones? Or alligator bones? Or frog bones? All of those look like they're on the verge of transition from water to land.

This is the Guardian and Dawkins spewing propaganda again, simple as that.

Observe:
As such, it will be a blow to proponents of intelligent design, who claim that the many gaps in the fossil record show evidence of some higher power.
Proponents of ID claim that, do they? I thought they claimed that the evolutionists are indeed correct about the how but not about the why (i.e. it was by design, not by accident).

If you think this actually solves the missing link issue you're certainly not a biologist. Even with the discovery the fossil record is still extremely complete and still shows huge gaps.

There's a difference between aquatic animals that have developed a dependency on water (such as crocodiles, hippopotami, aquatic turtles and tortoises, and beavers) and animals that are in a state of transtion from aquatic to future land-based only animals.

Most frogs and toads, many insects, and nearly all amphibians have evolved a codependency with water and land. This is how they evolved. They aren't in any transition from water becuase they are dependent on it for their reproductive cycle.

Yes, many proponents of Intelligent Design claim that the theory of evolution doesn't work becuase there aren't any transitional species. We've found many fossils that show transitions from land to air, and now fossils that show transitions from water to land.

This isn't a nail-in-the-coffin type discovery, but it's certainly a fibulator on the old guy. We have no idea what the fossil record is suppose to look like because we have no idea what types of animals lived then. We only know as much as we discover.

However, with regards to "transitional" species, this is an important discovery and the evidence supports the theory of evolution.

Ha ha, that is the first thing that came to mind when I saw it also. BTW that is considered to be the worst episode of star Trek ever.

Anywho, more info on the story with pics here:

Nothing disproves creationism, which is also why Intelligent Design is not a theory or a science because nothing can disprove Intelligent Design.

At this point in time, I don't know whether to believe evolution or intelligent design. Neither one has been proven, and neither one has been disproven. I think it's extremely pretentious of us as a species to think that we're the be-all, end-all of intelligence, development, etc, and that if we can't prove it, it doesn't exist.

I'm just trying to be open-minded here.

Exciting news.

As a side note, one of the more fun things to do when visiting New York City is to visit the Museum of Natural History. On the fourth floor the curators have arranged the Museum's fossil records in such a clear way that one can see for oneself various stages nodes of evolutionary development. It's fascinating and a triumph of good design to boot (the display, I mean).

I'm all for intelligent design, although I dont believe in any particular religion, and definitely dont believe in "the written word" of any religion.
Do I believe in "God" or something like "him"? Yes.

Can ID exist in concert with things like evolution? Sure, from my perspective, anyway.

Thank you MacNN internet police. Show me one other "Jesus crap". Shouldn't be that hard for you since you said there are "eleventy billion".

Why you don't just add me to your ignore list is beyond comprehension other than you got a thing for me

You wish I were as clueless.

It does not take a lot of expertise to know that Doofy's argument about reptiles and amiphibians' skeletons looking "like they're on the verge of transition from water to land" means that he hasn't the slightest idea of what he's talking about.
