I'm having trouble imagining what kind of a software glitch caused this problem. Any good theories?

Sounds like the company wants to get something out of him before they admit fault.

According to my calculation everybody on the planet would have to stay on the line for 10,000 hours/416 days for the call costs to add up to that amount.

Of course it was a ridiculous mistake.

Even if you make thousand of overseas calls it is impossible.

Did you know that you are charged $8.46 for the first minute when you accept a collect call from overseas. Tell your young teenager to buy a calling card from overseas and follow the instructions at the back or send a postcard.

Random data corruption through a dangling pointer, float misinterpreted as an integer — any number of things could lead to such a result.

I know someone who was charged $400000 or something for a textbook. It was the right price... only they charged that price something like 900 times.
