Van Gogh vs Monet

Vermeer vs Rembrandt

Pissaro vs Renoir

Which artist used the best colors; which representation was the best, which coup de pinceau gives you good chills?

Van Gogh's coup de pinceau borders on the cabernet sauvignon. Monet on the other hand is such a pinot noir.

And Pissaro? Don't get me started.

"'Jelly Hat' sounds silly," I told Prince. "How about something poetic, like 'Raspberry Beret.'"

I can tell this is turning into some kind of contest.

Damn! You said the "p" word!

Personally, I think they are all great painters, and would not dare judge them or their work.

I wouldn't be able to compare Van Gogh or Monet. Although I like Van Gogh more, I don't think they are comparable. Monet's work is too earlier to compare.

Between Vermeer and Rembrant, and I'm inclined towards the latter. But also must be taken into account that when Rembrandt was a demanded artist, Vermeer was a child.

I also note much differences between Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro (I hope you are referring to him and not to his sons and grandsons, which also paint) to be comparable (just take, for example, a look at Renoir's "Pont des Arts" and Pissarro's "Boulevard Montmartre"). The artists you mentioned, although contemporary, seem very different to me. Anyway, I like a some of Pissarro works much more that Renoir's and vice versa.

I ultimately believe it is -at some point, at least- a matter of taste.

For me Van Gogh is about colors, bright colors that bring ordinary things to life. Monet takes more risks by changing his style from the time he was young to now. Although in the Impressionists I prefer Degas.

I love Rembrandt but prefer the innovations Vermeer brought to the painting world. The light that comes out of his paintings is simply extraordinary for the time when everything around the men was dark.

When it comes to Pissaro I am talking about one of the founders of the impressionist movement. But, I prefer the colors and life in Renoir's paintings.

That thread came to me when I was looking to my daytimer on paintings from the National Gallery in Washington DC.

Better? Never thought of that unless you mean which paintings I prefer. Van Gogh will top that list, but half the time I don't even look at the names. If i like a painting or sculpture, i'll look at it until after i can't think of anything to think in words about it, then i'll look at it until i've lost interest. Heh, but then I live in Arizona and have an annual membership to the de Young and Cal Palace of Legion of Honor museums. I'll wander around any museum as long as you let me.

I don't care who painted something, as long as it affects me. Curiously, I'm the same way with music. Who sang that? I dunno, but I like it or I don't.

Monet and Rembrandt for lighting.
Caulder(I Think thats his name) for mobiles that have color and motion.

I like Dali myself - and Hogarth, and M.C.Escher, and Wyth's.
I also like the warmth of Norman Rockwell.

Hard to say what the "best style" is. It's all a matter of opinion.

I agree with those who like the lighting in Rembrandt's work, though. Lovely.

Calder, if you are naming that scottish guy who liked hanging things. Calder has a very impressive work (or, at least, a work I like very much). But that is off topic.
