So Google Calendar is live.
Safari users are greeted with a page warning them that it is not compatible with our browser and that we should use FireFox.
Now, I have nothing against FireFox, I think it's a decent browser, but it's not my browser of choice. Plus I was kinda hoping that the increase in FF users was going to do a lot to relieve the tedium of IE only websites, encourage web standards and help level the playing field in the so-called 'browser wars'. But if IE-only sites are just going to be replaced by FireFox-only sites then I can't help but wonder if we're not trying to ice skate uphill.
Of course, not that it's a big surprise to find Mac users being excluded from Google software...

Quit your b*tching - It's a beta. They will eventually support Safari. When Gmail first came out, it didn't support Safari either.

I've heard you get a warning in Safari; however, the page loads and works just fine.
The service seems pretty cool, and I'm hoping that you can link to these Google calendars from within iCal.

Sweet, it does support iCal it sounds like...
"Google Calendar, which will support the iCal data exchange standard used by a number of groupware products, will also let users share their calendars with others using the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) syndication technology."

Log-in, go to settings, select import calendar…
It says, "Choose the file that contains your events. Google Calendar can import event information in iCal or CSV (MS Outlook) format."

Yeah, keeping everything in a perpetual state of beta test is a good cop-out. Even Gmail is still beta.
But my gripe is more about web standards - why are big companies like Google still making non-W3C standard web apps? I would be interested to know what the technical reason is that it can run in FF but not in Safari.

siMac, it's just a fact that browsers have quirks. Especially when doing lots of tricky stuff with javascript and AJAX and DHTML. Inevitably you run across behaviors that are slightly (or dramatically) different in different browsers. So it seems reasonable to me to hold off on declaring it Safari compatible until they can do testing and work out the subtleties.

It's most likely not compatible with Safari more because they haven't yet devoted resources to testing and supporting Safari than for any technical reason. They'll get to it soon I'm sure, but not every decision has a technical basis. For us Safari users, this is one of the consequences of having low market share.
Besides that, yeah, I don't know how closely they are adhering to standards. But if they aren't, unfortunately it's not like that's unusual amongst big companies.

Some parts run funky in safari, I really have no need for it though, I will check it out once Safari runs it correctly.

I just wish they'd enable SMS notifications for Verizon phones.

So much nicer of a layout than Yahoo's calendar... and quite responsive on my PC at work. Can't wait to try it out at home.

I don't get it. I have iCal, why would I want this? It looks like a web version of iCal. I guess if Apple allowed for syncing between the two...

This is true. I tested the google calendar with Safari, got a warning that it might not work and chose to try anyway. It seemed to load ok. Didn't try it it out though. Maybe later.
I don't even use iCal. I lean towards caothic organization

For the same reasons people choose Gmail (or other online email services) over Mail.app?

I hope Apple does something similar, at least for .Mac members. While .Mac calendar publishing is very useful for me, I can't put information onto my calendar while I'm away from home. While Google calendar can work with iCal, it seems that it's a bit of a compromise, and by no means as transparent as an Apple solution could be.
