150 Mac Minis all on a rack...

Let's assume they all have at least 1 gig of RAM, and assume (I know they're G4s), that they're Intel Core Solo minis.

From the Apple store, a stock Core Solo with 1 Gig RAM and no other changes is $699.

$699 x 150 = $104,850... not a bad little investment for the computing power you get.

Compare that to $3399 x 150 = $509,850 for just the stock Quad G5 Power Mac with 1 Gig RAM... that's a savings of almost 80%

Stupid question but does Apple recommend you place a mini on its side like that? Could the optical drive do something funky?

I doubt they use the optical drives on them. Really, really big KVM, plus ADR and sharepoints.

Then again, I've never been there and it doesn't mention anything, so they might.

It's probably not much different from the optical drive in the the iMac models, so no, it shouldn't harm it all.

Yup. Those are the same drives used in the iMacs -- vertically.

Crazy! Those are a LOT of Mac minis! That said, that's a pretty cool lab. I'm impressed, I never really pictured the MacBU being that big. But it could really use a paint job.

Like many of the people commenting on the blog entry - I also wonder what they use for their automated testing..

When I lived closer to Microsoft, I did some beta testing and got to mess with a high-end (at the time) Quicksilver (I think). What's cool is that you get free software each time you test. I also tested for their PC software. I ended up with a couple of the latest versions of Mac Office, Windows XP when it was brand new, Office XP Professional, etc.
