I am in a doctoral program, which requires a lot of reading. While I'm not a slow reader, I want to make the most of my reading time (and I want to read more), so I'm looking for some speed reading resources (i.e. software applications that help or courses that can be taken, etc.)

What have you used? What were your experiences? And what would you recommend?

Thanks!

I took a speed reading class offered at my local community college my first year of college. Best class I ever had. Basically we tried reading faster and faster every day. We also worked on difficult vocabulary words and common prefixes and suffixes. My reading rate went from ~300 wpm and 75% comprehension to ~1400 wpm and 95% comprehension in about 12 weeks.

Thanks for the reply.

In doing some more research, here are some resources I found.

EyeQ (review)

PhotoReading (audio/seminar)

Memletics

AceReader

Speed Reading III (freeware)

Really Easy Reader (shareware)

Evelyn Wood's The Reader's Edge (unfortunately, it's PC only!)

Any others? Or any reviews/thoughts on these?

Check out http://www.ExecuRead.com/
It's the remnants of the original Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics course that JFK had his cabinet take. (Evelyn Wood started programs in several countries, then sold them off and licensed parts of them independently. None of them had exclusive rights to the name so there are now several different groups that go by the name Evelyn Wood or Reading Dynamics.) ExecuRead is the program that still teaches the course in a classroom rather than selling a software program.

Check their schedule to see when they're offering a class in your area. If there's no class in your area (and even if there is) contact the director, Bruce Stewart directly. If you can get several classmates to take the course with you, then he'll probably give you a discount. And if you can reserve a classroom at your school, he'd probably let you take it for free.

I highly recommend this class. Anyway, the thing I want to emphasize is that speed reading isn't primarily knowledge, where you learn how to do it and then you can do it right away. But rather, it's a skill that takes a lot of practice over time. It's a lot of hard work, and if you don't continue to practice it, you'll lose the skill.

If you have any questions about it, feel free to contact me.

Thanks for that link. I can see the benefits of attending a class/seminar. I will look into it!
