I do not get why there are these two kinds wrenches. One is good as the other, but I believe that the allen head is more popular, the star head should go by the way of the dinosaur unless someone can tell me the advtange one has over the other which I really do not know.

It's called Torx.

I think a Torx head can be used to produce a significantly tighter connection without stripping the screw or driver.

They rock, actually, as long as you have the right driver!

Torx is a gift to us from the big car companies. They'd prefer we pay them to do our repairs for us. Allen head is just as good as Torx.... as long as you use the correct driver...

AFAIK the square-drive head works the best (trust me, I've put in tens of thousands of screws)

Having used Torx extensively while doing repairs on Macs, I think it's hard to beat. The things just never slip or strip, the grip of the driver is always solid and secure. Note also that a Torx screwdriver can be used in place of an Allen wrench in a pinch (the reverse is not true). I find that Allen wrenches can be slightly hard to insert into the screw heads, and that the fact that they exist in both US and metric makes it easy to grab one that doesn't quite fit, and then slips. Torx sizes are numbered simply, so such mixups don't happen.

Torx is in no way hard to find: Sears and Radio Shack carry them, and tool specialists like Stanley Supply carry every type of screwdriver you can imagine. (Trust me, order the catalog. You'll see screw heads you never thought existed.)

Don't forget that there is no such thing as a metric Torx driver, unlike allen/hex keys.

Torx all the way baby!

I prefer star heads, because they don't slip out easily like allen heads, and they come in metric sizes, unlike Torx heads.

Torx works much better on very small screws. Especially the tiny screws on powerbooks.

whoever invented the torx bit needs to be burned at the stake!

I HATE TORX!!!!

But, I am biased... I will agree that they work great for computers and the like, but when they are used on cars they are EVIL! I have had more torx bits strip out and piss me off then anything else!

Daimler Chrysler put them on their jeeps... which is where I have experience with them..
