People supposedly pawning everything they own to pay for gasoline.
Give. Me. A. Break.
Gas is now .20 a gallon higher and now they've suddenly decided that they need to sell their wedding ring to pay for gasoline?
These people are the same people probably smoking a carton of cigarettes every few days, too...bet they didn't complain about having to pawn their jewelry and tools to smoke when cigarettes went up in price, did they?
This is a stupid piece of irresponsible slanted journalism.
But amusing!

Why do you think it's irresponsible and slanted? Do you think they made it all up?
Yes, construction workers who pawn their tools they need to work to buy gas to get to work probably aren't Mensa candidates. But I can believe that there might be enough people who do this to make a story out of it.

You're as funny as the story.
Gas goes up a couple of dimes and all of a sudden they're out pawning granny's wedding band?
Yeah, right!

Didn't John Denver have a couple of giant gasoline tanks buried on his property in Colorado or Utah or ?? during the 1970's oil crisis?
People smiled and told him he was the lucky one.

i guess some people don't want to cut other things out of their spending...so they feel the need to pawn their stuff to get money to help cut into the money they have to spend on gas. i'm don't see how this is funny, kind of sad though.

Quite. I'll tell you though, that man could sing.
BTW, I just Googled this and he had an advanced rating (Lear Jet type of craft) in addition to other others. Very ironic. Very sad.

Close-Up: The John Denver Crash
On October 12, 1997, the Experimental Long-EZ piloted by singer-songwriter John Denver crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the California coast. Denver, the plane's only occupant, was killed. On January 26, 1999, the National Transportation Safety Board agreed on an Executive Summary of its final report into the Denver crash, determined its probable cause and made its safety recommendations. Earlier, the Board published its factual report. The following is a combination of the two documents: the NTSB's executive summary and its factual report.

Well, around here anyway- it is more than a couple of dimes, 80¢ in 4 months. 40¢ in the last month alone. So, when commuting even 30 miles a day- at 20 mpg- that's an extra $50 a month. Not scary enough to pawn my jewelry- but it does add up. If someone is driving a truck an hour a day to work- it's more like $100 a month. With only a further rise in sight- how does someone come up with that extra $100 to $150 a month if it keeps going up?

Same here, not to mention I have a truck now that gets 5-10MPG less than my previous vehicle. I estimate around 80 dollars extra a month (I do alot of driving)
I've never been known to pawn anything for money, what I buy is what I intend to own forever. Though I can imagine a contractor with a large fleet of vehicles could be in some serious trouble if gas continues to rise at this rate (like you said 40¢ in the last month)
Maybe Cody doesn't understand because her hubby pays for the gas that gets sucked down by her Suburban. My vehicle is needed for my lline of work, therefore, I will make my budget work around gas prices.

I smoke cigarettes, weed, and drink booze.
Somehow I can afford gas, and all my bills too, including 300/mo for my truck and 250/mo for insurance. People overstep their finacial bounds and are forced to sell things that they bought that they (usually) couldn't afford in the first place.
Cody, don't take anything I say to personally because, in all truth, I have no idea who you really are and visa versa.

Please return, WDLove!
And while you're up, if you have a chance would you also...
Ooops, I just read that the actress who played her, (Theresa Graves) died recently (2002)!
Teresa Graves, actress with conviction!
January 10
Teresa Graves
*Teresa Graves was born on this date in 1949. She was an African-American singer and actress.
From in Houston, Texas she started her career as a singing with the Doodletown Pipers, later she turned to acting full-time. Graves’ first big television appearance was on ''Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In'' in 1969 and 1970. Graves appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and on several Bob Hope television specials in 1970 and 1971; she had a feature role in ''The Funny Side,'' a television series in 1971 and 1972.
She was in several movies in the mid-1970s, including ''That Man Bolt,'' ''Black Eye,'' and ''Old Dracula.'' Perhaps Graves’ biggest small screen part was starring as a lively undercover cop in the television police drama Get Christie Love in 1974-75. On ''Get Christie Love,'' she played the first Black woman hired by a big-city police department. Her final show business appearance was in a Bob Hope special in 1982.
Graves then left acting to concentrate on her involvement with the Jehovah's Witnesses. Teresa Graves died in a fire at her Hyde Park (Los Angeles) home on October 11, 2002;

Apologies. Anyway, probably not everybody is pawning such radical things. I remember when I was little, my mom pawned a good portion of her CD collection to get us to her next paycheck. I could see people doing that because of gas prices.
For another thing, the price increase Cody named is just for the past week or so. And it's not just a 20-cent increase. It's a (20*gas tank size*number of times you need to refuel in a week)-cent increase per week. The percentage of total income goes up a lot more for people who drive a lot, obviously.

Thank you, Chuckit.
to you - you're a good guy to apologize.
Anyway, it's a lot of money I know, for gas increase.
But the thing is, why not cut corners in other ways? Pawning things of value because of a few bucks? Honestly, if someone is in such bad shape financially that they are pawning their belongings to get gasoline then the problem isn't the gasoline price, really, it's something else, right?
